EDIT ADDED 45/5/2013- When this thread started in March of 2005, I never expected to see it survive this long or amass the quantity of information that has been shared here.

In the eight year run of this thread we have amassed almost 10,000 postings and surpassed a million views. This creates somewhat of a dilemma for anyone who has just discovered the forum.

Since the amount of information is virtually overwhelming, I suggest you set your preferences for this thread to read "newest first" and then begin to page backwards.

What you will find in these pages is a wealth of info on virtually any make or model of Chinese manufactured synchronous (non-inverter) generator in the 3,000 watt performance class. Info will include how to rewire series coils to parallel to obtain maximum wattage from a single 120 volt outlet. Tips on further reducing sound levels, how to care for these generators, which ones are "RV ready" and provide the best overall performance for the dollar invested. Which companies NOT to deal with, where the best prices are, how to safely wire the generator into a home or RV, how to check your RV for electrical faults, sources for generator accessories, which 20/30 adapters are safe to use and which are not. How to convert a gasoline generator to propane or NG. This is only the beginning. The forum has a life of its own with the focus sub-topic switching frequently. Still, the main topic of utilizing the amazing, inexpensive Chinese gensets is always there. The amount of creativity and innovation presented in these pages is indicative of the talents shared in the diverse backgrounds of the folks who make up our combined RV community.

Many of the original brands and models of Chinese gensets mentioned in the introduction and early pages of the thread have since disappeared. New EPA and CARB emissions requirements, company bonds assuring the emissions warranty will be honored even if the company goes out of business, and fierce competition in the industry have changed the playing field. Champion Power Equipment has become the apparent "trophy team" providing an ever expanding retail outlet, an ample parts supply, a strong warranty and excellent customer service. CPE has continued to improve their product and now offers a new model (#46538) with exclusive convenience, safety and performance features aimed at the RV market. Big names like Cummins/Onan, Honda and Generac all now have Chinese built open frame synchronous gensets available. Ironically, the prices often found on these gensets has not significantly changed during the past eight years - even with the devaluation of the American Dollar and new EPA/CARB requirements.

I also encourage you to use the search function and even the advanced search options to find information. Key works such as "rewiring", "PowerPro", "Champion", "Onan Homesite", "Duropower", "ETQ", "Jiung Dong or JD", "Tractor Supply", "Costco", "Lowe's" and "Home Depot" are all examples of keywords that will give you specific information on different models being sold by retailers today.

Or, you can fill your glass with your favorite beverage (keep more close by - maybe some munchies as well :D, sit back at your computer, tell your wife (or significant other) that you will see her in the morning and spend the next 10 or so hours reading through the postings.

No one on the forum gets mad if you ask a question that is a repeat. Please do not hesitate to post to the forum. All questions are considered important and those active on the forum will do their best to respond with a valid answer.

Also note we are not out to knock the Honda, Yamaha, Kipor or other brands of high end digital gensets. We recognize the quality of these products and their suitability for quite, efficient RV use. But, there is a flood of reliable, inexpensive and comparatively lower cost gensets coming out of China that are excellent alternative choices for the RVer wanting power to run an air conditioner, microwave, etc. without excessive noise or breaking the budget.

Oh, one last thing. The folks on this forum are true gentlemen. We do not flame one another or the product discussed - period. Ugly contributors usually have their comments and remarks ignored by our masses. It is not a forum to start arguments to obtain a clear win. We do disagree on many issues, but we have all agreed to do that in a respectable manner.

We now have the introduction of more and more inverter gensets. There is a rather extensive thread named "The Official Unofficial Champion 2000i Generator" on this forum. Today, I added info on the new Champion 3100i inverter genset. Discussion on this product may get moved to its own thread at a later date.

Many have looked upon this thread with distain saying Chinese is cheap and doomed to failure. I remember saying exactly the same thing about Japanese products a few decades back. But, over the past eight years the track record for Chinese built generators has shown otherwise.

Please, join us in a fascinating journey down the Chinese built genset road of knowledge.

This is the question I posted that got it all started back in March 2005.......

Randy

For a little over a month now, I have been somewhat intrigued by the availability of a 3000 watt, 6.5 HP generator at Pep Boys and Northern Tool for under $300.00. The engine on this generator looks identical to a Honda 6.5 HP OHV engine. Knowing that the Chinese have become very adept at โ€œcloningโ€ reputable technologies from other manufacturers, I was not surprised at the similarities. Neither store could give me any information on the generator nor did they have a โ€œrunningโ€ display model.

I have done a little research. This is what I have discovered:

Many of these generators are imported by ELIM International (www.eliminternational.com) out of Buffalo, New York from Jiung Manufacturing in China. (The unit at Northern is identical but carries the JIUNG name.)

The engines are indeed a Chinese knockoff of the popular 6.5 HP 196cc Honda Engine. โ€œSupposedlyโ€ Honda has licensed the engine technology to the Chinese manufacturer of the product.

The Chinese company that makes the ELM3000 generators is a rather large, diverse, long-standing company with a reputation for โ€œabove average qualityโ€ Chinese made products (Jiung Manufacturing). There are many more Chinese companies making almost identical gensets.

The generators at PepBoys do have a six month limited warranty. But, it is only on the engine (not the generator) and requires paying for shipping to and from Buffalo. Probably not a very practical thing to do if you have warranty issues.

ELIM does supply replacement parts (a PDF parts manual is available on the ELIM web site). No prices are given for replacement parts nor is there an โ€œavailability listingโ€.

The generator head itself is a brushless design. The only really significant wear parts in the generator are the bearings โ€“ most likely universally available.

The published dB rating is 67 at 23 feet. This is โ€œreasonablyโ€ quite for a generator of this size as most comparabl.... The 67 dB rating is the same as Honda gives their 3000 watt CycloInverter with a โ€œlook alikeโ€ eng...

Yes, I put it together so fast it came out as a campion.

IT is a very nice generator. Remote start works great. Starts right up every time. Now figuring how I can best mount it.

More later.

The Celotex is one of the original materials I experimented with some three years back. It did work well but was not moisture proof enough to use as an enclosure material.

I am rapidly approaching a camping weekend in the non hook-up loop of a national park and am anxious about the noise factor when using my champion to recharge the trailer batteries each day. Not so much because I'm worried about any grief from the rangers, but for my own enjoyment while in the campsite while the gen is running.

The generator will be running in the bed of my pickup which has a carpeted fiberglass topper with side, front, and rear opening windows. The bed of the truck has line-x coating. Also, the generator has a wheel/handle kit on it so it sits a little higher off the ground.

When situated in the bed of the truck the generator will be placed in the rear left corner, which puts the switch panel, choke, and pull starter within fairly easy reach for a right handed person such that I'm pretty sure I can get it started when it's in the bed.

This of course also means the air intake at the gen head and the engine exhaust pipe is at the other end facing the front of the truck bed.

I am getting ready to head out to HD to buy either or both the celotex 1/2 sound block and the rubber backed door mats.

My thought is to make a five sided rectangle/cover structure that would sit down over the entire generator. Cut a hole for the intake end like Professor has done above and I assume another hole is needed on this end for exhaust? Or since the gen head and exhaust are so close together should I cut one big hole for both?

Do I need more vents or airflow then this? The celotex cover will sit down and rest on the bottom of the bed, but the bed has ridges and the bottom of the celotex cover will not be sealed flush with the bed bottom, so there will be a little air flow through those small openings. Not to mention with the RV cord plugged in the celotex cover will be jacked up a bit where the cord exits at the bottom of the cover.

I realize this is a balance between sufficient airflow for safe operation vs. fewest openings for best sound deadening. If I need more venting I wonder if I could use some small screen vents, maybe 4"x4" or so that could be glued to the celotex. Or, I'm pretty sure I have a couple of extra foundation screen vents left over but those are pretty large, like around 4"x12".

My thought is with this cover over the generator I would leave both side windows closed and the rear window closed on the topper during operation. I would open the front window which of course is up against the back window of the truck. (The truck has a non-opening rear window) The front window of the topper is hinged across the bottom and folds in and down. I would prop this window open leaving about a 4" opening gap. The theory being the sound would find its way out via the 4" window opening which is at the top of the topper/truck and pointed up.

I have not seen nor used this Celotex and was wondering if I should just use construction adhesive to make this cover or should I try to use some sort of screws? Can I use a regular circular saw to cut this material?

I hope to have this together soon enough that I can test it at home before leaving on the trip. I can use my ir thermometer to check the temp at the gen head with the cover on and the gen running, and I suppose check the exhaust temp at the tip of the exhaust pipe just inside the hole. What operational temps am I looking for? I could also put a thermometer inside the bed of the truck to check ambient temp with gen running if that is useful info?

And finally, what about combining the celotex cover with the rubber backed door mats? Maybe make the celotex cover a little larger than it needs to be and cut up the mats into the same size as the cover panels, and use spray glue to glue the mats to the inside of the celotex cover panels? Or maybe the rubber mats should be glued to the outside of the celotex cover? And of course cut the corresponding holes in the mats.

Of course I need to be able to put the celotex cover on the generator while it is sitting in the truck bed. The generator with wheel/handle kit is 22โ€ tall and the distance from the truck bed to the topper roof is 45.75โ€ so there is not much room to play with clearance wise. I could remove the wheel kit while the gen is hanging from my auto hoist (thatโ€™s how I load/unload the generator) just prior to backing under it with the truck but that adds another level of complexity to the operation. I could use some sort of hinge or breakdown arrangement on the panels of the celotex cover but again, another level of complexity.

Lets say the celotex cover is 22.5โ€ tall (height of the sides with the top panel flush with the top of the sides). How thick is the mat, ยฝโ€? For a total cover height of 23โ€ and a total installation height of 46โ€. Whew thatโ€™s close enough to make things exciting. ๐Ÿ™‚

However, I guess there is nothing that says the sides of the celotex cover need to extend all the way to the bed when installed on the generator? The celotex cover could rest on top of the two end loop frame rails of the generator with the sides suspended 1โ€ above the bed floor could it not? This would be total celotex cover height of 21.5โ€ and total installation height of 43โ€. Or if I were feeling lucky it could be a total celotex cover height of 22โ€ and a total installation height of 44โ€.

Thanks for reading my diatribe on this subject. Any input on this plan would be greatly appreciated.

Part no. for engine of the Champion 40051 - ST168F-2-1000000G

Part No. for engine of the Lifan 3500E LF168F-2

Similarities in the part numbers? who knows.

The similarity between 3,000 watt class Chinese open frame synchronous generators - especially engines, is no coincidence.

Casting engine blocks, cranks, pistons, heads, alternator shells, etc. is not an inexpensive or easy to create start-up business. Neither is the investment required to do the stamping of steel into the desired shape for a fuel tank, engine fan shroud or muffler. Even the little parts like ball bearings in the recoil starter, ignition coils, rubber motor mounts, etc. are items that a small company could not afford to manufacturer in-house.

Builders of these generators prefer to purchase "raw" parts from the larger manufacturers and do the needed machining, sheet metal fabrication, tube bending for the frame, wiring and controls within their own facility. This is what makes the "differences" between these gensets. BTW, the majority of these Chinese gensets DO NOT come to the USA. Over 85% of all the units manufactured go to other countries! New rules by our EPA slated to go into effect by 2012 may reduce that number even further.

At one time I made an attempt to create a family tree of sorts to show where the parts trail started and how all of the many companies building almost identical appearing generators operated. It was s futile effort that was out-of-date before I ever got a fraction of the way into detail.

There are (or were) two large foundries that did the castings and forgings for all of the major engine/alternator parts. Jinan Liaoyuan Machine Co. LTD is believed to be the largest supplier of these parts to the Chinese sub-industries. That particular foundry may be the link to your "LF" number (Liaoyuan Foundry???).

If you ever have a Chinese genny engine disassembled, you can usually find the foundry name inside.

The difference in, for example, the GX200 type engine from company to company is in the machining. They all use essentially the same castings. There can be differences in rockers, push rods, piston and ring sizes - but cranks, rods, flywheels, ignition, carburetors and the like are essentially identical. Provided the raw parts are properly machined, assembled and tested, all of the GX200 clone engines should give identical performance and lifespan.

I just printed out the parts list for a Champion 40008. Like the one you have so often reported and covered. Are we saying here that Champion is the mfg of all these parts with numbers like ST168F/ then various numbers to follow. And Champion has a milling and mfg factory and are not just assembling various parts and maybe some from 'Lifan? If so, that is great news. If my Champion C46540 has an engine produced in a Champion factory I am more than a happy camper. I'm over joyed.

Here is an update for anyone that has ordered the new Champion from Costco.

My email to Champion this morning...

Good morning,

I have ordered a 45638 Generator through Costco as have many others that participate in the Rv.net forum.

I understand that they should be shipping soon. Since Costco provides no shipping updates other than to say that our orders have been sent to fulfillment, I was wondering if it would be possible to get an Official update on the potential shipping date to post on RV.net for others that have ordered, and for those that are waiting to order after they begin to ship.

Any info concerning this matter would be awesome. We love to hear from the manufacturer as it cuts down speculation and bad information from spreading.

Thank you in advance for your response.

Ordered mine on the 8th & got it on the 14th. Suprisingly quick, but I am in Cali. too so not such a stretch. Only problem is the thing doesn't put out any juice!! Calling tech support this a.m. Make sure you fire it up when you get it to check for proper operation. Hope they still have a working one left for me. Need it by this weekend though. $@#!!

The "blanket" lying over the genhead/alternator is an old starter insulator wrap that I had lying around (I used to have a '73 DeTomaso Pantera with a 351 Cleveland - the headers would bake the starter and it would quit working!). I initially wrapped it over the alternator and down between the alternator and the muffler enclosure to "protect" the alternator from radiated muffler heat. THEN, I discovered the alternator was getting hot from within ... the temp rise was about the same with/without the wrap. The more I thought about it, since the heat was internal, the wrap might even be containing the heat and making it worse! I removed it from the alternator and will probably leave it off altogether since the duct blower is so effective. My brother was going to bring me a piece of the reflective insulation like you use to protect floorboards from a catalytic converter, but looks like I really don't need it!

I figured I would check in and give you guys an update on my now 3+ year old champion.

This last weekend it let me down for the third time, but first some history.

I got this thing for practically nothing by using points earned on a toyota bonus card, the only time Ive serviced it is one oil change last year (because I felt guilty lol)

First breakdown was a snapped pull cord at glamis dunes, champion sent me a replacement ๐Ÿ™‚ The reason it snapped was due to a broken choke lever and me pulling on it like a madman trying to get it to fire, champion also sent me a new lever free.

Second breakdown was again a broken pull cord, I dont know if the rope is cheap or it was bottoming out on the pull but I replaced it with a pull sting from a craftsman leaf blower and its been fine since.

Third breakdown was this last weekend, it was 90+ outside and I ran it damn near all weekend running the AC. It died due to running out of gas, after filling her up it would not restart, after pulling on it for a few minutes I started looking it other causes. It turns out the oil level was low and had tripped the switch, a glug of oil and shes purring again ๐Ÿ™‚

I should have known to give up pulling when it dint start on the second pull like it ALWAYS does! You can probably lay complete blame on me for both pull cords as me + booze = you will start dammnit!

The reason for this long winded post is to say how happy I am with this little cheapie genset, its run for now hundreds of hours in horrible sandy nasty hot conditions with damn near zero sceduled maintainance and has sucked through countless gallons of gas.

Without a doubt the most reliable combustion engine I have ever purchased.

I admittedly have not been a good owner, I drag it out and drop it in the sand, fire it up and dont really check on it until I pack it up on sunday. No washes no oil level checks no filter servicng no carb cleaning.

If my toys were this reliable I would be a ton richer ๐Ÿ™‚

Lot's of folks on this thread often mention something about my many endless questions. Hey, at 76, still trying to learn a thing or two or more?

Kudos with your DuroPower project. My question of the day. The blanket I see laying over the genhead.
