50 amp Cord

Our motorhome came with a 50amp. power cord that is an absolute bear to coil up in the compartment, especially in cold weather. I am looking for a source for a cord that is more flexible. Thanks

Two products comnbined might do the job.

When I fist got the motor home I'm sitting in I got both 30 and 50 amp extension cords.. There is a reason for this.. Also I got a 1 foot long "Shore cord" this is one foot of cord with a TT-30 plug and in my case a 50 amp Marinco Outlet about 100 bucks. .they also sell a 50 amp version.

On 50 amp sites (Where I am now) I use the facory 50 amp cord and if needed (not here) an extension

on 30 amp sites I used the 1' cord and a 30 amp extension or two (the other one is from my old trailer I kept the 30 amp cords).

The 30 amp extension is not black, but a bright color (Orange I think) and is superflex.. remains flexible in zero degree weather.

This worked well.. till the plug/outlet melted as 30 amp hardware will

Then I removed the melted plug/outlet and did a proper splice. So when I'm on a 30 amp site I still use it today. Beats the blazes out of wrangling the 50 amp stuff.

if I ever buy more 50 amp cord (The dealer had both 30 and 50 in superflex) its' going to be winter grade superflex not the standards black junk.

Option 2 applies to ALL rv's both ones with hard wired and ones with disconnectable cords.

Get a good heavy duty hose reel. If it is used and leaks much the better.

Run a 50 amp cord through the thing with the outlet just outside the reel where the hose would normally connect (you are going to have to work with the bearing a bit on that end) so the cord is one piece. Cut the shore cord to just a bit longer than what is needed to reach the reel or use the 1' model I mentioned above.

now Connecting:
Comnpletly unroll the cord, if using the 1' adapter then pull enough cord through the reel to reach the adapter (note in this case you can roll the outlet up inside the reel no need to modify reel) If you need to "loop" the cord do it in a single long loop under the RV (if it is too long)

To disconnect.. Unplug return outlet to reel housing and roll it up like a hose.

It's not the brand of cord you buy, it's the code designation it has on the jacket that makes a difference. RV shore power cords normally have STW designated jackets which is thermoset PVC. Will always get stiffer when colder. Our Marinco and Conntek cords have the same jacket specs.

If you want a flexible cord, you want one that is elastomer based like SOOW, but you'll have to buy the cable and install your own connector and plug. I thought someone makes a flexible RV cord, but can't find a link at the moment.

I recently purchased a 50A extension on Amazon. I believe it's a Camco and it seems to be more flexible than the TMH suppled one.

It may not help on your coach, but on some it is much easier to store the cord in a "figure eight" than a straight "coil".

Flexible sheathing like neoprene is not as cut and abrasion resistant as PVC sheathing. I chose flexible cord but always bear in mind it's increased vulnerability.

We had a problem with the same issue on our fifth wheel, so we had an electric reel installed.

use a good pair of work gloves. Ask a boat person to show you how to roll it as you try to coil it. Lay it out flat before you start so it can roll as you coil it.
Finally, you are right, a 50A core is a bear to handle, stiff, heavy, and especially if it is wet. Keep several old towels or rags in with the cable, so you can dry and clean it as you store it for the next time. Hope these hints help.

The yellow Marinco 50 amp power cord is much more flexible than my OEM black one. But still heavy of course. But I have rolled the black one and later the yellow one in 40 degree temps. Yellow one is much easier.

And This site lists a "super flexible" 50 amp cord, but I know nothing about them.

Good luck. Flexible wire is extremely expensive, add the cord ends and you could be in the 350 dollar range for 50 foot.
