It may just be my set-up,but I have found these plugs tend to get hotter than the dog bone style.

Yes, it does get warm to the touch, but I've had no issues so far. Used it once down in Florida for three days in Auguast; A/C was on nonstop with no issues.

To the O.P.
Are you saying with a 30 amp set up you still use the 20 amp plug to power all your needs?(like with an extension cord). If that's the case and all you have is a 50 amp plug that you will have to adapt down to 30amp, there is no way to get the other 20 amps.
I may be mis-interpeting your words???

It is not going to damage the RV unless there is an "open neutral". But you do check voltage and polarity before you plug in.
If the neutral becomes open nothing will work.

This is how the 50A(M) to 30A(F) adapter looks like... Note only one 120VAC 50A 'HOT LEG' is tapped for your 30AMP trailer.

WALMART may have them... Think I saw one there when I picked up a 30A(M)-15A(F) adapter.

You still need the Dog Bone connected to the pedestal first.
Power cord from there to RV is no different than plugging into a reg. 30 AMP conn.
Surge protector is something that should be standard equipment on all RV's.

Your 30 amp panel has a 30 amp MAIN BREAKER who's job is to protect your panel.. And it will do a very good job of it.

So what happens if you use a dog bone..

Best case: the heavier 50 amp PARK wiring delivers better voltage to your RV making things work better and last longer

Worst case (Ods one in several million) A partial short in the shore cord, which as noted is very very highly unlikely causes an overheat of the cord.. I have never seen this happen.

HOWEVER if you use an extension cord and the plug/socket lay in water.. I have seen that happen but that too is rare.

The only thing not protected is the 30 amp wiring between the pedestal and the 30 amp breaker in your trailer. If one of those wires become chaffed and short to ground the 50 amp breaker should trip, but only if the draw were above 50 amp. I am sure this scenario is very unlikely.

Using a dog bone adapter to connect your 30 amp TT to the 50amp outlet will not hurt anything. Your TT will still be protected by the 30 amp main breaker in the TT panel.
