a/c question

my camper is a 2002 montana fifth wheel and the a/c works but i noticed that when it's just sitting and not being lived in but hooked up to shore power that there is a component of the a/c that seems to be making some noise as if it were running but not/??......i know.....sad..laffs.but any guesses as to what is running when it's supposed to be off??.....all controls are either in the off position (cool/off/heat)...fan is in off postion....i never really noticed when we were staying in the camper and the control was in the cool postion but the a/c had reached ambient set temp and cut off via thermostat setting that it still made this noise???..it SOUNDS like maybe a compressor or possibly a fan???......as soon as i get a chance to i'm going to take the shroud off and/or the 'filter' screen from the inside and see if i can 'see' anything more to help me figure out what is goin on here.....any one?....thanks in advance....
one more concept to add is possibly that i have a cover over the a/c to keep daubers out.......and yes i took that off when i tested it to see if it was working.....but not sure if it would have any impact on the a/c unit???......wouldn't think so...anyway.......take care y'all and again..thanks
  • Is is possible that the noise is wind driven? (fan) Have you tried throwing the breaker on the AC and still heard the noise?
  • If its Dometic with a duo-Therm thermostat, get your RV service person to check it out. Probably needs a new thermostat and control board. About $100.
  • Try turning off the circuit breaker to the AC. If the noise goes away, you have found the problem. If the Thermostat/control board is bad, it will do exactly as you described even if the thermostat is off. Unless you are using the AC, turning off the power to it will prevent any further damage to the compressor and such. I and others have had the same problem.
  • ok.....turned the circuit breaker off and the noise ceased......so what next.....is the thermostat bad or the control board.....are they one and the same??....where is the control board if not?.....and how does one determine WHICH is bad if they are NOT the same thing???....remember the a/c WORKS fine when turned on.......
