Yes- the switch will not work without the box. The switch controls the box, the box controls the awning. You can rewire with a different switch, you can figure out a set of control relays, but you cannot directly control the awning with that switch without the box.
You can use the same switch that controls a 5th wheel front landing gear. The wiring will also be the same. Doug
