Belching Batteries

While adding water to my Trojan T105s, four of the six cells belched pretty significant gas bubbles. The water was low but still above the plates. I added maybe 3/4" to each one. It's the first time I've seen anything like that. Is it normal?
  • The whole travel trailer has unfortunately been sitting still for 9 or 10 months. Guess I have to get out and stir 'em up a little more often.
  • I know anytime I've tipped a battery sideways, air bubbles come to the top. But blurping while filling, never seen that.

Many many times I have read people giving instructions to fill a battery "To the bottom of the filler tube" or "To the bottom of the split ring".

DEKA, and the person who trained me so many years ago I lost count, both say/said, Fill to just BELOW the bottom of the filler tube/split ring,, like 1/8th to 1/4th of an inch.

In fact if the battery state of charge is less than 100% you might wish to go a bit lower than that, then charge, and finsh topping off.

WHY.. Well as the battery gasses during charging, (Very common epically if you fast charge) it may happen that gas builds up around the tube faster than the "Split" can vent it, and when this happen fluid rises in the tube, now blocking the split completely and the battery spits at you. Leaving a bit of a gap, gives better venting.
  • GOGGLES not glasses por favor. A full face shield is better.

140 degree battery electrolyte causes total 100% permanent blindness, instantly.

    Yes it is scary.

  • While adding water ??
No, that is not normal. But, IMO doesn't mean there is a problem either.

While charging, it is normal for them to bubble a bit. By rights, water should be added when they are disconnected and have sat for a while. In reality, wear some safety glasses and gloves while doing it.

    X2...
