Buddy Heater line filter?

Has anyone used the filter for using a Buddy Heater with a hose kit and 20# cylinder? I bought one and it would not flow gas through the outlet side. After I took it off, I found that it had gotten pressurized with gas, and I could press the stem button on either end and let gas out. But apparently the outlet one was not being depressed by being connected to the heater or the portable grill I also tested it on. Is this user error, or a common fault, or??

PS: I have no intention of using the heater inside my RV. We are hoping to use it inside our screen room at night in AZ.

  • When you push on the brass stem button it should release pressure.

On the opposite side there is also a Schrader type (tire) valve down inside that will release pressure if you get down in there with something.

Both stems have to be depressed for gas to flow thru.

Since gas is getting into the filter it's pretty obvious the problem is with the outlet side stem not getting pressed.

If you are brave you might try hooking the filter up with pressure on it and manually spritzing a short burst of gas out as a test.

We use our MR HEATER Heater from my tent camping all the time for outside activities... Great back-up heater to bring along...

We have the COLEMAN ROADTRIP grill that uses the 1lb propane cylinder so that is what we use on our MR BUDDy heater. Always have 5-6 1lb canisters with us all the time... I also have a COLEMAN BLACKCAT heater from the tent camping days we bring along that uses the 1lb propane canister...

  • The Mr. Buddy Heater is equipped to use high and low pressure supplies. Be sure you are installing the filter on the correct, high pressure, fitting.
  • Its is not an uncommon problem-its getting the filter (or hose) tight enough to engage the schrader valves, tighter than I'd really like on our buddy since there are no fitting heads to put a wrench on, just smooth rounds. Its just after as tight as I can muster by hand that the schraders open enough to let gas flow. Sometimes I need to repeat, loosen and retighten as the valves open enough to light & run but after a few minuets heater shuts off (on high)- it will relight and run a few minuets then shut off again. Simply valves not open enough for required volume.

When we first got our mr heater buddy went around on this. After initially not working at all I still thought a defective heater or filter- I always start on high but if I didn't turn it down soon enough it would shut itself off. I could start on low & it would run, but not high. I removed the filter, ran hose direct it worked. Checked the filter, it flowed. So now I just, in my opinion, over tighten. If heater shuts off I tighten some more. It has gotten better or easier over time though.
Also check the male threads on the filter-they must start their life in the bottom of barrel before packaging.
  • Thanks for the replies. I had sent it back to Amazon as defective before I posted here. The replacement came, and it worked. It took quite a while for the gas to flow. Maybe I just didn't wait long enough on the first one.
