Can I Modify Portable Gen Exhaust ?

Has anybody modified the way the exhaust was pointed on your portable generator.

Like rather than exhaust shooting straight out of the back,
installed a 90 degrees elbow?

A master small engine mechanic told me not to modify the exhaust since it would change the back pressure?

I have a Yamaha 2800 and would like to mount it on/ near the rear bumper.
But the exhaust would be headed straight into the back of the RV.

Any ideas? THANKS..

you would on an old B&S engine with a 3 inch exhaust/muffler

newer designs with large mufflers have bolts/supports hoding the muffler/exhaust
any weight there might affect the 'exhaust Tip' but not the engine manifold
a number of people have modified the exhaust of the cpe 3000 generator,
with good results and no harm to the manifold

me i would use a piece of flexible exhaust wraped with heat tape and point that where wanted

Careful with any extra added weight! It can fracture the aluminum cylinder head threads like plastic. You would absolutely have to design and install some kind of a bridge hanger to support the pipe bitter end.
I can explain it to you.
But I Can Not understand it for you !

Steve,

Modifying Generators

VERY long thread, but maybe search "exhaust" or "enclosure" - when building an enclosure for noise reduction, inevitably the exhaust requires modification.

Could you add a longer platform, like a receiver hitch carrier and turn the generator around or sideways?

My dad had same problem. The easy fix was to turn generator around on the rear rack. Even if you add a 90 you will/might still have the heat hitting your rear wall.
