CAT Service

Just a note to my northeast neighbors. I took the Sahara to Milton CAT in Milford MA for a scheduled valve adjustment on the 3126. While it was there, I had them do the lube and oil service and replace both drive belts. They went above and beyond in service, even giving my valve cover a brand new coat of CAT yellow. The service manager Jose is a great guy and treated me very well. We had a miscue in when to pick up the bus that resulted in an extra 2 hours drive for me, so he knocked off a few bucks on the shop rate.

It's tough to find a truck shop that will work on a motor home around here. The RV place does ok work but for this CAT specific maintenance item I though a CAT shop would be best.

The tech went through everything underneath and found some suspension stuff that needs attention. I figured there was something up because I've been hearing some squeaks lately.

He also recommended a 195° thermostat (the coolant temp is running just above 170° which I thought was good). I'd be interested in hearing opinions on this from the diesel gurus here (Brett).
  • I have the same CAT engine in my 2001 Beaver coach. That temp is very good....mine has always ran at 182 for a coolant temp. I took my DP to my local CAT service for convenience because its only 15 minutes away from home. It turned out to be a huge mistake on my part. A few things to have repaired and it turned into a 3 1/2 month screwup by them. Then they tried to be dishonest and not admit their errors until they were caught red handed. Then they had to admit fault!
  • Reference the question above on optimum diesel engine operating temperature, at one time I worked for a public transit system and had the job of researching technical information and writing the specifications for new equipment purchases. At that time, 195 degrees was the optimum operating temperature for a diesel engine, since the laws of physics do not change that temperature should still be optimum - thus the recommendation by the Cat technician. We purchased thermostats, cooling system components including radiator shutters in order to maintain 195 degrees as consistently as possible.
