Ceramic Tower Heater Woes

I have the above heater that I use as a supplement heater in the winter in the fifth wheel. It is digital and has an on board thermostat so you can set the heat and let it work automatically.

Out of the clear blue, the controller went south. Now it just runs on the high setting with no thermostatically control over the heat.

So is there anything to try before taking the fan out and tossing ldthe rest? like love taps or something similar. :R

Bet I can wire one in the time it takes to peruse all 136 TV channels and finally settle on the Third Season Episode Five of The Dukes of Hazzard.

NOTE I bought TWO line voltage Thermostats. One was added to the body of a heater (And works great) the other was the plug in unit like the one I linked to (Same model, different dealer) it works well.

It has the advantage of "No tools needed" No screwdriver, No pliars, NO wire cutters, Just plug it in and plug into it, hang it up and turn the knob.

Buy a DUPLEX RECEPTACLE BOX

Buy a pair of ROMEX 1/2" clamps

Buy a PIGTAIL on eBay or Amazon. 14 gauge

Chop the pigtail on the heater, where you want the thermostat to go

Buy the stupid thermostat

FOLLOW THE PICTURES IN THE DIRECTIONS

Holymole, did you guys ever buy presents for your kids that had SOME ASSEMBLY NEEDED?

And have the intuition to post images here asking what was what inside the heater? What do I cut? Where does this wire go?

There is a great difference between avoiding stuff because it's not Plug & Play

a) Genuinely Confusing

b) Laziness

"Harrumph! Some dishwasher this turned out to be! For only nine thousand dollars more I can get the model that reaches out to the table, snatches dirty plates and silverware, and loads itself. But I'll wait...the price is bound to come down and it's inevitable a new model will feature the dishwasher unloading itself and stacking stuff in cupboards and drawers"

When I expend a little time and effort I get what I WANT. EXACTLY WHAT I WANT.

Example I have an OLD Fantastic Fan Endless Breeze.

The On/Off selector switch failed (garbage grade)

So I go to the hardware store and by a LINE VOLTAGE knob dial Air Conditioner switch. Then to Del City Dot Com and Purchased an On/On/On toggle switch

The dial thermostat clicks on and off as well as adjusts for temperature.

ENLARGE the hole where the original switch WAS

And drill a 1/2" hole alongside for the On/On/On switch

There is an OBVIOUS line voltage to original switch feed wire. Join that to the pigtail lead of the line voltage thermostat. Review the direction's picture diagram.

There is an obvious pigtail OUT of the thermostat. No need to switch NEUTRAL so join the negative wire direct to the fan motor 12 volt negative (ground) wire.

The thermostat OUT wire runs to the On/On/On switch.

The ORIGINAL switch has THREE wires heading to the motor.

One at a time, cut and connect the the three terminals of the On/On/On toggle switch.

When I want to use this fan...

I rotate the dial of the thermostat and then by virtue of the readings on the DIAL I know where the room temperature is -- when the fan starts is where the room temperature is.

So I rotate the dial to where I think the fan should shut off. Today, I want it to shut off at around 78F.

Do I select LOW or MEDIUM or HIGH fan speed with the toggle switch? Depends.

Then the fan is running when I go to bed. I fall asleep. In the early morning hours, the fan will shut itself off. I am in dreamland.

I may or may not be awake when the room temperature rises and the fan starts up. But when I does, I'll know the temperature is rising.

The secret to this -- is knowing "I can do it with the help of forum member assistance" by posting images and asking questions.

Which is true with most things technical.

I am NOT GOING TO PAY thirty-five dollars from Fantastic Fan for a two-dollar switch.

If I have to repair something I will modify it and make it work THE WAY I WANT IT TO.

If I enlist help, I would take photos of stuff BEFORE disconnecting wires. More photos of stuff I intend to use.

But then the call of the La-Z-Boy brewkies and potato chips, is almost overwhelming in it's intensity...

Wow this post is paying off big time. Couple of nice units here that I was not aware of.

How about that white Rodgers one, does it have to be wired in the line or is it plug and play like the more expensive one?

thanx folks.

Looked up my own answer. The B 30 has to be wired in just as any other line voltage baseboard thermostat. It can be wired for 240 or 120.

I just noticed Harbor Fright has a parabolic dish heater on sale.

Seeing how these things are junk, might as well pay salvage price.

Using a baseboard thermostat means "some assembly required" ... You need a suitable junction box for it, cable glands and input and output cables, wire nuts, and the knowledge to wire it all together.

Nice find wa8yxm, that looks like a nice module.

YES. Google: plug in thermostat for space heater

This is what I use

One such Thermostat

NOTE: the dealer was found using the Search above, it is not the one I purchased from. NO recommendation as to the dealer either for or against.. But i do recommend the serarch.

Mex, you cant use the words Resource Depletion on here, this is an RV site, the epitome of resource depletion!!!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

I was near the Imperial dunes and watched the New Years crowd heading home in a constant stream of jacked up fuel guzzing 4x4's pulling tri axle TH. I was passed by motor home after motor home pulling huge enclosed trailers or tri axle stacker trailers. We dont have energy problems and we sure dont have any environmental concerns. ZERO. MORE MORE MORE ๐Ÿ™‚ BAAAWAAAAAAAA

Idiotic resource depletion wins every time...

Anything labelled SMART is likely something BROWN as far as value is concerned.

Can you UNPLUG the heater, turn it upside down take off the cover then take some close-up images then post them?

If a radiant heater, care must be taken when modifying so as to not bypass the tipover safety switch.

A LINE VOLTAGE DIAL THERMOSTAT CAN BE USED but it's going to sit on the floor where all the cold air resides.

Throw away junk but while it's doing it's part at being junk set it on something like the open oven door so it doesn't burn the rig down if it goes into melt down.
