converter buzzing

My converter sounds like its sending morse code messages. Not a loud buzzing, but I had to track it down this morning. We are on shore power at an Indiana state park and have been on shore power at home in between trips. I don't hear it all the time, and moving slides, or landing gears doe not seem to affect/cause the noise. Any ideas, oh, ye wise persons? david
  • Ferro: Steel or iron

    Resonant: adjective

(of sound) Deep, clear, and continuing to sound or ring.
Of, relating to, or bringing about resonance in a circuit, atom, or other object.

    Synonyms
    ringing - sonorous - vibrant - sounding

The older ferroresonant type chargers hummed. Sometimes I had to apply foam to the case then dig the ventilation holes out in order to calm them. But a hum is a hum and a buzz is a different animal.
  • We have had that problem, and would shut the circuit breaker off on the post, let it sit 15 seconds or so and turn the breaker back on. In most cases it stopped. We noticed that this happened after power outs, or after switching to the generator and back. We also noticed that it happened worse in cold weather.

My WFCO Converter/Charger unit will make a tone sound when a fuse is blown and there also will be a light come on showing which fuse is open...

  • The are supposed to kinda buzz when you have a load on them. If you have no load and it's buzzing, here is what was wrong with mine.

When mine started buzzing and it was a real low buzz, and you really had to listen for it.......it had a blown capacitor. When we opened it up it looked like someone shot one of them with a 22.

Check the volts coming out of it and leave the tester "on" it after it reaches what it is rated for. Mine started climbing and wouldn't stop!
Converter was literally frying the battery.

Check your house battery right away. Good Luck.
  • Old fashioned converters make that noise - heat and old laminate. Newer converters tend to be silent but as the electrical demand increases they heat up and the fan kicks in - if the fan's dirty then it's going to make noise just like a computer fan.
  • A loose lamination in the transformer is the usual cause of 'buzzing'.
