Cracked water tank

My trailer has developed a leak in the fresh water tank. There is a crack near the bottom of the tank, near the drain fitting. When the tank is really full, it actually sprays out, but as the level drops it changes to a drip.

I’m guessing that the whole tank is aging, and needs to be replaced, but is there anything I can do to patch it for the last two weeks of this trip? I tried duct tape, but it won’t stick to wet plastic. Maybe if I let the tank go empty so it can dry out.

Or only camp in places that have water hook ups, but the reservations I have aren’t that, and with July 4 coming up it may be hard to change.

Go to harbor freight get a plastic welder and heatweld it back up

There is a Harbor freight store near me. I think welding would be the way to fix my tank. It is made from a white opaque/translucent material. Does anyone know what type of plastic these tanks are made of so I can get the proper welding sticks?
  • "Water weld"
Works on pipes and hard plastics
Will even setup under water, inside a tank
Once dry very hard and water proof
Do not apply to pressurized lines, spraying water will push it away before it can setup
  • My leak must not be where I thought it was. It leaked a lot when the tank was full, but slowed down when the tank dropped to 3/4. Also, it slows down when I turn the pump off. So not likely a crack at the bottom of the tank.

It is slow enough now that I can live with it until I get home.
  • I once did a real quick emergency fix on a leaky tank with Blueskin.
Blueskin is a construction membrane make for waterproofing around windows, doors and such during the home building phase.

It has a 100% waterproof membrane on one side, and a VERY sticky, tar like adhesive on the other. Sticks to anything and everything, as long as it is dry and semi clean. Comes in rolls in various widths. And it is always very flexible, allowing for expansion and contraction.

I was on the road for a couple weeks when I found the leak. I happened to have a roll of the stuff with me so I did the fix right there.
It held so well, it was still there when I sold the unit.

There are a pile of different manufacturers of similar products. Bakor Blueskin is just one of them. I buy it at the local lumber yard where home construction materials can be bought. Might even find something similar at Home Depot.

Forget the duct tape, that will never hold.
  • should be dry ,ruff up a bit with sand paper, get a tube of J@B weld auto store and go to it. might hold for awhile ,but tanks expand an contrct so it won,t hold forever. not hard to change out.
