Cummins Onan RV Generator code 45

Hi,

I have a 2013 Voltage toy hauler with a Cummins Onan RV QG 5500 EVAP gasoline generator, with 45 total hours. New battery.
Model #: 5.5HGJAB-6755J
Serial #: D120326173

The generator will start and immediately shut down. If I start it again, the engine will run (and sounds fine) but it must be in a fault mode because it will not power anything in the RV. If I shut it down and restart, the process of shutting down immediately and running in fault mode repeats again.

When the generator first starts and shuts down, the diagnostic light flashes 3 times, which indicates a "service fault".
I press "stop" and the specific code 45 flashes, meaning "Speed Sense Fault" (Controller unable to sense quadrature frequency).

I'm fairly technically and mechanically inclined, but this is the first issue I have with this generator and it's electronic controls. I was hoping someone more familiar with it could give me an idea on which parts I should start with to test and/or replace.

Thanks in advance.
  • I would call Cummings Onan and give them all of your information. They have a 3 yr warranty but not sure what it covers at three yr. They will go into your files from your sir # and get the in service date and possibly help you. If not if you talk to a service technician they may give you the answer as to what is wrong with your unit. I had an issue with mine so i called the main office and spoke to the warranty department manager (Ellen) and she was very helpful. Hope this helps.
  • I don't know the new ones that well. But sounds like it is not producing AC voltage. The quad single comes from the stator windings to the voltage regulator.

I am also on smokstak where some of the guys know more about the newer units than I do. If you go to the Onan site posted. You want to deal with Hank. I have known him for years. He is a good honest man.

This is what the Serial # says about your genset.

    Month built: D = April
    Year built: 12 = 2012
Build location: 0 = Fridley, MN
    Active Serial # 326173
  • First thing is visual inspection. Anything loose? Remove and reinstall any circuit board connectors to assure a good connection.

Code 45 more than likely bad brushes and or bad board

Bad brushes at only 45 hours on the generator?
  • OK I did a bing search and found this site with live Onan Techs:

    Onan

I'm not sure if that link will work just search on:

"your model number and code 45"

And when I say live I mean as soon as you connect the tech will be asking how he can help
  • It might have a prox switch sensing the teeth on the flywheel for the speed measurement.
Check for loose wire or misadjusted sw. Prox switch may also be bad.
