Since most new flat panels have an earphone jack and many of them mute the TV speakers when connected, it seems like you have a cable missing. There should be a cable from the screen's earphone stero jack to the input of the selector. It may be that your selector has conventional RCA audio jack inputs and the previous owner was not able to find the gender changer to go from 3.5MM stereo to two RCA audio inputs.
