Generator shuts down

The 5500 onan genny on my 2007 Southwind is acting up. 3 months ago when I exercised it, it ran about 20 minutes and shut down. Last month on a trip we used it for about 2 hours and it ran fine. Today when I went to exercise it, it again ran for about 15 minutes and shut down. Would not restart. The unit is full of gas so I know low fuel and oil is not the problem. Any suggestions as tow hat the problem may be. Thanks for any info.

How long do you have to wait before it starts again. Sometimes a failing coil will do this when it heats up. I would check for spark right after it shuts off,if no spark you found the problem.

Could be fuel pump. Had a similar problem. Turned out to be fuel pump.

X2 - Had the same issue. Our Onan has a "prime" function on the start switch on the generator. Diagnosed the problem by trying the prime function after the generator shut itself down - no buzzing noise from the fuel pump. Waited 1/2 hour and the pump ran again. Generator again shut down after 15-20 minutes. New pump, no more problem.
  • Failing fuel pump? Also generators vibrate like crazy so check for loose electrical connection to fuel pump as well as the various wires which connect to the circuit board.

  • The manual for my generator has trouble shooting steps for the engine and the power generation.

If your manual has something similar start with, Engine Starts but will not run.

There also may be a similar symptom in the power generation section.
