Greasing wheel bearings

I will be doing a 10,000 km trip next summer. Before I go, thee bearing will be cleaned, inspected and regreased.

Generally, with all my trailers, I grease them once a season.

However, I have never put quite that many miles on per season.

So, how many km should wheel bearings be repacked?

My feelings are you are right and for a good reason (other than wasting good grease). I have always been told the center must be void of lubrication to give proper heat dissipation of the bearings.

When repacking wheel bearings, how full do you pack the center of the hub between the front and rear bearings?

Did 18,000 miles in 3 months,From Mi to Fla & up the west coast to Alaska and back & had no bearing problems.Getting it greased before we left the Tech asked WHY DO YOU WANT ME TO USE AMSOIL GREASE?? Because I've Never had a Problem with it.

I've tried, but just can't keep the darned things lit. ๐Ÿ™‚

ROFLMAO.......

Bearings must be like those cigarette butts in the urinal which are soggy and hard to light.
Too many geezers, self appointed moderators, experts, and disappearing posts for me. Enjoy. How many times can the same thing be rehashed over and over?

Re Swimming _spre,,wheel went flying, ripped off brake wires and burnt my hand when I touched the smoking hub to see if it was hot. (dumb, dumb, dumb.)

I had treated myself to having a tech pack my bearings.

Never again. I do mine every year or 12,000 miles. Regrease, replace bearings as necessary and change the seals and cotter pins every time.

When you blow a bearing (for those who do not know what I meant), the grease breaks down and the bearings heat up and break. You can have a wheel go flying.

Obviously there's not sufficient grease if they won't ignite. :B

I feel same as fj.

BTW, i have never smoked a bearing. :h

I did mine at the five or six year mark and don't plan on going there again.

Be sure to take a test run after doing all the bearings. Too many horror stories of problems arising after redoing the bearings due to improper procedures or just plain "Oops" issues. Personally, unless your talking about a boat trailer, I think every year is overkill. Especially if you're doing less than 10,000 miles per year.

Maybe do the trailer bearings when you do your other vehicle bearings. ๐Ÿ™‚

My other vehicles have sealed bearings and get replaced maybe every 10 years.

Grease is cheap. I have smoked too many bearings to not do it yearly.

With what you an others are saying, I am good, even though I m putting higher miles on, still won't be over 10,000 miles or 16,000 km.
