HOT WATER TANK CONTROL

We have a 2013 Dutchman Coleman CTU 271RB Travel Trailer with a hot water tank that offers no control of temperature. Western RV technician in Leduc, Alberta advised the service department, that there is no way the heat can be turned down. Which forces us to turn the cold water on then the hot. The manual clearly shows two different types of hot water tanks where adjustments can be made, but ours does not resemble either. Could anyone share some suggestions at this stage please and thanks so much in advance.
  • Anyone tried leaving the little cover off the T-stat, if its getting too hot? I don't know why that wouldn't work.

Oops, chuck that idea, that would be going the wrong way,....sorry !!
  • Every Attwood I've had (3)is too hot @ 140 degrees ! And every one I have changed the T-stat to 120 deg. My current Suburban is not as hot, and is tolerable.
Seems like the OP could at least tell the name of the heater !
But at any rate, the dealer-Mfg is correct, there is no adjustment on our normal Att-Sub heaters, but I do understand there is an adjustable T-stat available.

There are aftermarket adjustable thermostats available.

    For Suburban ?
  • Suburban (non pilot) have pre-set t-stats. 1 set for electric and 1 set for propane
Optional normal t-stats are available in pre-set 120*F or 140*F (Standard is 130*F) 120*F is harder to find.
    NO adjustable t-stat option

Atwood (non pilot) have pre-set t-stats (Since 2004 just 1 set for both electric/propane)
Optional normal t-stats are available in pre-set 120*F (Standard is 140*F)
An Adjustable T-stat is available 110*F to 150*F
  • I have never had a adjustable. IMHO too hot is better sinc you have to mix in cold water the hot last longer which is a good thing since a 6 to 10 gal tank is so much smaller than a 40 to 50 gal like you probably have at home. :)
  • Some have an adjustment and some do not. I had an Atwood that had a temp knob but the suburban I have now is set and I would have to buy a new thermostat if I wanted it to be adjustable.
  • Both Suburban and Atwood water heaters have 'factory preset' normal t-stat and high temp t-stat

    Suburban.....
Normal t-stat set for 130F & High t-stat (ECO) set for 170*F or 180*F depending on model

    Atwood.....
Normal t-stat set for 140*F and High t-stat (ECO) set fr 180*F

Pilot flame water heaters do have an adjustable temp control lever...usually 110*F to 150*F.

Which Brand & Model do you have?

    Suburban SW6DE, SW10DE etc.
    Atwood GC6A-8E, GC10A-8E etc.

Brand/Model number listed on data sheet in outside compartment....should be on trailer data sheet also

And if the Western RV Tech/Service Department didn't know/understand how your water heater functioned..........:S
I'd find another place for service. Water heater temp control is not complex.
