hot water tank/propane leak

Just got a used 2007 pleasure way. Noticed a propane smell in hot water tank area. Painted area with soap, and found bubbles where the propane is emitted across to igniter when the propane tank is on, but not trying to ignite the hot water heater. Has anyone had a similar problem and what was your solution? Does that entire propane connection need to be replaced near the hot water tank? Can be done ourselves or take in to repair?
  • All installed today. Pretty easy. A pipe wrench and yellow gas pipe sealant helped loosen and seal some connections. Will test install tomorrow with the propane turned on. Let sealant set overnight seems appropriate.
  • The part is ordered from Amazon and will be here Tuesday. And we are becoming rv mechanics!LOL (Lots of luck or lots of laughs?)
  • The valve will not normally come with an orifice.
    Amazon.com should have valve.
  • Thanks! We are in process of finding a valve supplier. Methinks we can do ourselves.
  • Yes, you are correct. The leak is coming out of the tiny orifice at the end of that connection. Can't find any other area showing bubbles or leaks. Can I replace just that part? It is a Suburban. The propane is turned off. We do not have any appliance manuals or diagrams for this unit.
  • If I understand, the propane is comping out of the orifice- you need to replace the gas valve.
  • You should be able to do most your self.
    Turn off propane, now!
    Get some yellow Teflon Tape.
Teflon tape should be added to any pipe fitting, but not the flame fittings.
Identify whether you have a Suburban or Atwood water heater and post.
Identify and post which fitting exactly is leaking.
