Leaking propane tank

I have a pretty new 11 lb propane tank. We have used it a few times without problems (we use it for a Campfire in a Can). This last trip we noticed a slight propane smell. I checked the tank and there was a slight "hissing" sound. Took it out, tightened the screw they loosen when filling, really tightened the valve. The hissing stopped. Went down the road a bit and it started again. Take and move it around and it stops, then it will start again.

Any suggestions? Is the tank valve just bad. It seems strange it would work and the pin just develope a leak.
  • Could is just been overfilled, and be over pressurizing, and bleeding off ?
If it was leaking only while the temperature was rising, I would bet on it.
  • Thanks for the suggestions on locating the leak. The problem is I was on the road when it started leaking. Now that I have time to figure out what is happening it will not leak. The trouble is now I don't trust it.
  • A little soapy water 1st to see exactly where it is leaking from would be a big help. :)
  • Sounds like you are referring to the bleeder screw. You will need to use the LPG and then have a place like Amerigas take a look. It is probably just an O-ring.

If you take it for service with LPG in the cylinder you will lose the LPG.
  • First off you have a 'propane cylinder' not a 'tank'.
Tanks are permanent mounted and used in MHs.

The valve you 'really tightened' is the bleed valve. It is a needle valve and you have damaged it by 'really tightening' it.

The leak could be form the bleed valve, could be from the pressure relief valve could be fro any fitting on tank.
You need to use a soapy solution and identify where to leak is coming from.
Then have the problem repaired.....new valves, fittings tightened, fittings removed/cleaned/proper sealant used etc.
