Mounting new mirror head on old arm

I need to mount a new Velvac mirror head on an old Velvac bus arm on my 1997 Safari Sahara. Velvac tech support has been little help. Basically, their attitude is that I cannot mount a new mirror head on a 23-year old Velvac arm. (They tried their best to sell me two new complete units until they found out that the radius of the point where the old mirror arm mounts is larger than anything they sell today.)

Old mirror has a 7/8-inch shaft, plus a plastic bushing that brings it out to 1 1/8-inches. New mirror has a shaft of 1-inch that I need to make fit in a 1 1/8-inch socket in the arm.

I need to figure out what others have done to solve this problem. Current ideas include trying to have the plastic bushing machined out to 1-inch internal, wrapping it with tape (a wrap or two of duct tape?) to bring it out to the necessary size, or shim it with something else to bring it out to size.

I’m sure I’m not the first one to face this problem. What have others done when faced with the need to mount a new mirror head on an old Velvac bus arm?

Thanks!
Wayne
