Norcold

Just got the MH back in operation with new house batteries, cranking batteries and propane. Cold weather has been sort of rough on batteries here in the Sunny South. During the dying of the house batteries the inverter would kick off and have to be reset. Well apparently the Norcold decide it would fault out and although there is power to it, the fault lights are coming on. There is no inside lights and no effort to cool.
Google and YouTube are great. Google told me what to do and YouTube showed me how. Got to have a magnet to reset a black box on the electrical side of the Norcold.
Anyone ever done this and did it work? Let me know please.
Magnet should be here later this PM and I can advise further tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Ever heard 'if it don't fit, get a bigger hammer'? Took the black box to a local repair shop this morning (Norcold will not sell to an individual!) to order a new part. Talked to the owner about the part> he asked if the light had come on and stayed on - yes. I told him about the attempt with a magnet to get a re-set. He took it and looked. There was a coach with a outside cover off the refrigerator. He walked over and took the black box off it and put mine in it's place. Red light comes on. He got a parts magnet and held in place for several seconds. Nothing. "Let me get a bigger one" Walked over and got another part magnet with a may 3 inch head on it. Held it against the top edge of the box above the red light. Maybe thirty seconds later and the light went out. He swapped out the boxes and said 'here ya go'. No charge! What a nice kid this guy is, and is the OWNER of the business. I didn't realize it at the time, but I knew his grandfather years ago.
Best encounter I have had lately.

Disconnect the 12 volt power to that black box. The magnet must be held for at least 30 seconds at the top area by the light to reset it. You can remove the 4 screws that hold the black box together and see if it is corroded inside. If so, then the magnet may not work. Doug

Cannot get the thing to reset!! Norcold did a recall and the local RV guy I believe added this black box (I think)
. There is a small red light at the top of this box. I have used a small, parts magnet and also a large magnet at the bottom of a surface mount spotlight from my son's service truck. Nothing!
Is there a specific place to touch or place the magnet?

doxiemom11, what did you use and where on the box/cube?
Is there a reset button on it any place?

Looks like there's a recall on some of these units over issues with that black box.

The recall is NOT about the Black temp box. It is about INSTALLING the Black box kit if your 1200 does not have one. Doug

Thanks for the clarification. Are these standard on new Norcolds, or something they came up with as a fix for older units only?

1. Once they announced the recall, ALL new built 1200/1210 come with the black box.
2. IF you have numerous trips of the box, odds are it is NOT installed correctly. It is NOT to be clamped on the black tube with the connections and light facing you. It is to be installed with the connections facing DOWN. That helps keep water from getting in the box when washing the unit. Water intrusion is the most common cause of false trips. Doug

Did the magnet fix numerous times and then smartened up and went to a residential unit.

I have had the recall done twice now that has had the black overheat box replaced to a newer revision. It still works good and the recalls were paid for so not out any $$$$. If it does go out I will get a residential put in.

Turning off electrical devices...phones, laptops, iPads etc...and allowing them to reset and power back up should be step number one when an issues arises. RV fridges are one of those devices.

Looks like I need to add a magnet to my tool bag for this eventuality.
How big of one do you need?

We have done it and yes it works. You can also try unplugging the 110 and the 12 volt power and let the circuit board reset - plug back in 12 volt first and then 110 power. Fridge off while you do this. Restart frig and see what you have.
