It turns out that I had to hold the choke closed, not open to keep it running. In other words, I had to richen the mixture. That's another reason for me to think that the carb needs a better cleaning. I plan to put it back in tomorrow morning and see how it works.
Ok that explains things a lot. I agree then that having to hold the choke closed means that there are passages/jet still clogged inside the carb.
