P30 Power steering fluid loss

I had a strange issue while parking motorhome and trailer at a race recently. Had to do some jockeying to get into a tight spot with the trailer, and when I went to use some boards for leveling, I see power steering fluid dripping down around the steering box. I didn't do it for the rest of the trip.....but what happened? I did notice that the handling was particularly poor for this beast.....I have had very good handling since doing some upgrades. It was a tad windy, but not much. I had a squeak in the front suspension I am looking for, and found a sway bar bolt a bit loose. Not sure that this alone would case the handling issue. Any thoughts about the fluid, and is it related to anything else I described? If I need to start some looking, I want to know where to look ahead of time. I'm sure the way it was coming out that there is wetness all around the area, making it hard to track.

  • Temperature many have caused the overflow.

    We had a Bounder motor home and the hydro boost had to be replaced - leaking power steering fluid. It uses the power steering reservoir fluid for operation.
  • Hoses look pretty good. Cleaned all fluid, and started up and worked the wheel lock to lock repeatedly. No leaking. The best I can see is that it came from the overflow of the reservoir. May have overheated it with all the brake use and steering use jockying the trailer into our spot at the race.
  • I shall climb in there. It's been so hot out that I am avoiding it.
  • Could be excess pressure going to full turn on the wheels. Hoses could be failing and the fluid is very hot.
  • Yep on the 90 Gulf stream. Strange it only did it when worked hard. I will check my belts and hose.....as strange as that sounds now that I read it.

  • P-30 chassis use the power steering pump to run the hydro boost for your brakes. You need to get it checked out.
    Look to see if you have two v-belts on the power steering pully.
    There is amain belt and then a "safety" belt to run pump in the event primary belt fails.
    This is on your 1990 Gulfstream?
    I am going to guess you simply have a bad hose.
