Pop Up Heater not Hot

This is my first RV and my first time visiting this forum site. I'm needing assistance on learning more about my Pop Up camper's heater. We used it for the first time recently on a cold night and the heater was warm, but definitely not hot. We were very cold all night long after leaving it running.

Any suggestions on what I can check/repair/replace to get this heater to function better and hotter?

Thank you
  • Some Flagstaffs have a "Cool Cat" heat pump, not a furnace. The OP hasn't told us the model of trailer or the furnace/heater.

A heat pump never blows 'hot' air, only warm air.
  • There is definately an issue with the furnace. Our Pup is a 12' box with "king" beds at both ends and a dinette slide. Our furnace will heat it to an unbearable temperature in about 20 minutes. We actually use electric heaters rather than the furnace because it is quieter and cheaper, but then we don't camp where it is super cold either.
  • Please get a carbon monoxide alarm too, an improperly working furnace can be a VERY serious carbon monoxide hazard! I have seen them for under $15 at home improvement stores.

I like that we have the furnace in ours if we ever boondocked (we have CO detector!), but I am personally thinking about mounting an "in wall" type electric heater since most our camping will be "camp ground camping" where electricity is included free ;-)

My 2008 Starcraft 14RT suburban heater NT series runs us out. It is way too much heat for our POPUP. We don't use it much just for that reason. The propane furnace blower is also very loud and keeps me awake all night...

We use two oil-filled portable heaters - one in the hallway next to the door and one back in the unused tent bed end sitting on a board. This oil filled heater has a O2COOL fan setting behind it to blow some air around the trailer.

For us its better to use the CG electric then for us to use our propane anyway haha...

  • I'll check that tomorrow when I pop it up again. I'll do a once over cleaning of the parts behind the grill and see if that makes a difference.

You may have a spider web in the burner tube.

  • I just purchased a used 2007 Forest River Flagstaff pop up camper. I'll have to get the info tomorrow on the brand of heater we have.

    Thank you
  • Is it a furnace, OR is it a heat strip in the AC. IF it is a heat strip in the AC. It is a waste of time. Get a space heater.

If it is a furnace. It should have kept you reasonably warm, and cycled on and off. Get it checked.
