Power surge

Greetings. I recently had a power surge going to my 2006 Jayco Jay Flight fifth wheel. My main 30A breaker was tripped along with the 15A Utility Converter breaker. Now unit is not getting 125V to unit and when tripping 15A Utility Converter breaker back to open position hear buzzing sound and breaker trips. Is it possible I fried my power inverter? I opened up the electrical panel and see no burnt/discolored wires. I went through and tested all my electronics (by using extension cords running to shore power) and my TVs, microwave and so on is fine. Pulled my battery and attached it to a Battery Tender and it is reading good.
I am unable to find a part number on the unit itself to see about a replacement. Help! Should I be taking this to a RV repair shop?
Thanks, Shane
  • With the symptoms you describe and the fact that it's just the one circuit, then I do indeed think the converter is fried.
If you get a nice three stage converter you may start to consider the surge a blessing!
  • Good time to upgrade the converter to three stage charging if not already.
  • Did try turning on all breakers one at a time. The only one that continues to trip is the 15A Utility Converter breaker. Everything else works. I tested all the electrical appliances by running an extension cord into the trailer and plugging them in one at a time. They all function. Fortunately the trailer was not being used when the surge occurred. It was sitting next to my home. So everything was off.
  • There is almost a 100% chance most of your electrical appliances are fried...

When they are all fixed go buy yourself a multi-function surge protector which can be portable or hard wired to your RV
  • Have you tried turning off all breakers in the RV then plug in?
Turn on just one at a time starting with the main.
    Post the results.
  • If the converter checks out, maybe this rig has an "energy management transfer switch" ?
  • Did you try plugging your converter into the extension cord, Sounds like your converter is fried. :(
