Propane Alarm

Propane alarm was going off in our C when I went into the garage today. MH has been parked for last two weeks with everything turned off. Did have electric plugged into wall outlet. I unplugged the power cord from wall and plugged it back into the MH connection then turned on the aux switch and the alarm came back on within seconds. I could smell nothing and saw no defects in the tank assembly. Made appointment to have it looked at by my service center tomorrow. Has this happened to any of you and if so what was wrong?

I see your rig is 9 years old. If detectors are still original, you are doing the right thing replacing them.
  • Called Winnebago parts and ordered all new detectors today. Should be here next week.
  • Decided to replace all three detectors since propane and carbon mon. alarms went off within three days of each other. Like some suggested, I believe they're just so old they're worn out.
  • Thanks for responding everyone. I'll see if I can get to it to remove it and replace it. Thanks again. Oh and the red light was on before I turned off the power.

What people said. Cancel the appointment and try replacing the detector (and check the battery first). New detector is $50 or so.
An interesting read on this very forum few years ago: What makes a propane alarm cont go off - very entertaining. A Lysol spray can do that, for example, or a dog with stomach gas problems, or a rocking chair up against the detector.
  • Yup. Off with it. You can get a direct replacement unit at most RV supply joints on online. Mine has a clip-on 12 volt connection, and 2 screws to attach it. 3 minute job if you are slow!
  • I see that your RV is 9 years old, It may be time to replace it.

They have a useful life of 5 to 7 years. Most have a replace by date on the rear of them. I would check that out.
  • Is the warning light red or orange? If it's orange then it has malfunctioned and needs to be replaced.
Very low 12V voltage may cause it to squeal too.
