Propane issues

I have a 2004 Viking 2480 ST tent trailer, and am having issues with keeping my propane devices (hot water heater, stove) lit.

I have a full propane tank. The valve is definitely open. My water heater is a Suburban SW6P. I am able to light the pilot, and it stays on as long as the knob is on 'PILOT'. When I turn it over to 'ON', the full flame kicks in like normal, but that only runs for 10 seconds or so, then that and the pilot go out, and then the flame ignites in the burner assembly ( i think that is what it's called...it's the horizontal copper tube with an opening that looks like another pilot light). For our stove, the burner lights, but even when it it on high, it only puts out a minimal flame.

Not sure where to go from here, short of taking it into the shop (expensive!)

Could the regulator connecting to the tank be bad? The step down pressure regulators? A blockage? A leak? Is there an easy way to test for any of these?

I love this form and all the wise people who read/post/answer to it!
  • Try a reset
Turn the tank off wait 10 mins turn it on SLOWLY (a quarter turn at a time!)
The new valves are made to close internally if they sense a severe leak and filling the lines too fast sometimes triggers that safety
If that fails try to borrow a known good tank or use your tank to run a home gas grill
If that works you are down to the regulator
    Good Luck, Mike
  • The thermocoupler on the water heater? I thought that too, but remember, the stove is having issues too.

    Hmmmm
  • Sounds like the thermocouple is bad. Not sensing flame and shutting down possibly???
