We’re currently at Llano Grande RV Park in Mercedes, TX. Needed to have one of our 40# propane tanks filled yesterday. Propane is delivered to the park from a local propane dealer directly to your site.So they go to fill the tank but the valve is stuck and they can’t get it to pop free to fill the tank.So here are my questions.Can the valve be replaced or should I just get a new tank? If the valve can be replaced, is this something I should consider doing myself, tank is empty of propane? Never worked on a tank. Can order valve at Amazon or a new tank from Amazon.If I should have the valve replaced by someone do you have any recommendations on who/where locally?If I should just get a new tank, any suggestions on where to get one locally.Thanks for your help everyone.

Get new tank locally,have them take old one away,so what if it costs a few bucks more,don't waste time and money on some thing that is defective.Time and money are for enjoying life.

Are you sure the tank is empty? I find it puzzling that the tank could be empty if the valve is stuck shut.Is it remotely possible you have a situation like below? we had the complete opposite happen once, it was cold out and we were having the motorhome tank filled and the valve froze in the open position and could not get it disconnected, an old timer that was working there came by and tapped the valve area with a brass wrench and ta-da the valve closed, I know this has nothing to do with your case, just sharing information to store away for a later time

I'm assuming the tank is empty, could be wrong. With the valve stuck the only way to tell for sure if it's empty is to weight it.So, how much should an empty 40# tank weight?????

I think I answered my own question. I just weighed my tank, it weighs 29.9#. Shipping weight on a new tank from Amazon is 30#.So I guess my tank is empty?

The propane company that comes around to fill propane tanks/cylinders can (should) replace the valve

You could do it yourself but you would still need to have tank purged and refilled by a propane company (once you remove valve air will be inside tank so it will need to be purged).

Did the propane guy have the right type of fitting for propane cylinder?

Yes, the propane guy has the correct fitting. He filled my other tank last week and that one works fine so far, knock on wood!!!!

Is not the weight of the cylinder stamped on the collar as it is with 20# cylinders?

When dispensing propane, I had a few tanks that wouldn't fill. The folks brought them in because no propane would flow out of the tanks either. From weight, we knew there was still plenty of propane in the cylinder. The solution was to bounce the cylinder on the protective collar a few times on something hard - concrete, tree stump, etc. Freed up the valve every time.
