Rolls Surrette User manual

And I thought the Lifeline user's manual was well written and comprehensive.

Roll's manual should be made a Sticky. I think most every question about lead acid batteries I have ever read on this forum is covered here:

http://rollsbattery.com/uploads/pdfs/documents/user_manuals/Rolls_Battery_Manual.pdf

Seems like they consulted Mex's postings over the years, and then cut away all the obtuseness and sarcasm.

One thing I find interesting is that they say in a renewable energy PV system, on page 30:
The charge current should be
within 10-20% of the 20 Hr AH rate (C20) rate of the battery bank

Before I went with the single screwy 31 deliberately lowering capacity to have my 198 watts of solar be able to charge at a higher rate approaching 10%, I started this thread titled, Perhaps capacity is not king:

http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/27369461/srt/pa/pging/1/page/1

It details my thinking on this topic with good input from the usual suspects and the acquisition of the Screwy31, so I like seeing it in print from the premier flooded deep cycle battery maker.

Where has mena661 been BTW? We need a report on his L-16's

As far as the lowered capacity, well the screwy 31. Dollar per cycle compared to 2 sets of previous 2 group 27s in parallel, I came out ahead.

Rolls does make a T-1275 sized battery. It weighs 90 LBS, has 136AH capacity, and positive plate thickness of 0.170 or 4.32MM and ~ 1400 Cycles to 50% DOD

http://rollsbattery.com/wp-content/uploads/specsheets/12FS135.pdf

The Trojan T-1275 claims 150AH, 82 LBS and unknown plate thickness and 1200 Cycles to 50% DOD.

Can't seem to find Roll's 12 FS 135 for less than about 400$ before tax core and shipping, so A new T-1275 at under 200 smackers delivered, it will be.
  • Thanks for the manual. I've never found Mex anything more than fun with a lot of knowledge mixed in.

One of the reasons I kept my split bank capability was for just that reason. I wanted to make sure I could still charge adequately even if I could not use the Magnum Inverter Charger. (It does not play well with GFI outlets). That means my back up charging is with a PD 40 amp unit.
  • I wasn't trying to besmirch Mex.
I'm sure those paisley flourescent tie guys called him worse than obtuse and sarcastic.

I've certainly learned a lot from him over the years
  • Mex is nothing more than a humble, obedient, servant of reality.

And to me there is nothing so tedious and droll and being forced to sit and read droll, sterile rote. Learning should be fun, just a tiny bit challenging but not something that takes itself too seriously. I use sarcasm on myself. Brenda, caught me sitting one time in the garden on my rear clutching a broken shovel. I thought I was alone. My running commentary made her laugh so hard she wet herself. My son in law regularly lays his head on the food prep table in the enramada and beats his fist onto the surface.

Anger is destructive. Self destructive. I try to manage my anger and sometimes fail. I and no one else pays for it. A group who continues to learn and share is a wonder of the universe. Magic happens and it happens with smiles. You all know my philosophy: Stop Learning Start Dying.

Enough of the Maudlin already. You folks are great. Wish we had more Tech-ettes (just joking Naio)

NinerBikes ordered me to resume work on the BORG. With a brand new work station and some semblance of parts and tools organization the prospect is more attractive. Wish my body parts worked better.
  • The new table/workbench sounded like a good excuse to get you cracking on finishing up the Borg, while sampling your new workbench. Sounds like a win /win to me.

Idle hands are the devil's workshop. Don't go flirting with him.
  • Smooching hooves, horns and pitchfork tines ain't my bag.

Finding things thought long lost. Honorable foot switch is one of then. Share this nugget if you wish...
  • FWIW, these C&D Technologies manuals are pretty much my "VRLA Battery Bible":

    http://www.cdtechno.com/resource/support_doc.html

Their various engineering write-ups, charts, and graphs were right-on with respect to how my RV's two Group 29 Interstate AGM batteries performed for around 8 years before I replaced them a few months ago. I think that C&D rebranded a model of theirs for the Interstate batteries that I used.
  • My former Interstate AGM RV batteries looked IDENTICAL (in specs and physical characteristics - but different colored cases) to an existing C&D Technology model when I bought the Interstate batteries years ago. My Interstate AGM mobility batteries were an earlier version of this current Interstate mobility model:

    http://www.interstatebatteries.com/content/product_info/specs/dcm0100.pdf

I'll bet that C&D makes this latest Group 29 AGM battery for Interstate - here's the C&D version:

    https://www.cdtechno.com/pdf/lit/12_1126_0815.pdf

Since I've always been told that Interstate doesn't make batteries, I assume (there's that word again) that C&D made and rebranded for Interstate the AGM batteries that I bought back then.

I went the other way around with the replacement AGM batteries I bought just this past summer. My AGM Fullriver batteries are made by Fullriver - but they also rebrand the model into a Rolls-Surrette AGM model that is identical in specs and shape - but with the standard Rolls-Surrette colored case.

P.S. Note the recommended float voltage range that Interstate and C&D show in their specifications .... exactly equal to the nominal output voltage of a good old RV single stage converter's ... so that the converter doesn't ruin these batteries over time. This is just like the situation with the larger Group 31 Fullriver AGM batteries I now have in our RV such that I didn't have to lay out money for a new multi-stage converter/charger just to go with these particular AGM batteries. I'm usng the same 13.6 volt RV single stage converter for the new Fullrivers as I used with the previous Interstates.
