Rubber window surround not intact

Exhuming an old post of mine for help. Today I was doing some maintenance and noticed a much larger gap on one of the windows, as if some rubber had somehow broken off. As answered earlier, this material is only "trim" for appearance so I haven't concerned myself with it until now. If it is only trim, and it doesn't meet as explained, where does any water that falls into the gap go to? Does the gap fill with the water then once full, it can't accumulate any more and what's in there evaporates out once the rain stops?

One easy way is to remove the old one, and get a new piece that's the same length plus an inch or three. Seems to me you should be able to trim fairly precisely to length when you're installing it.

You could also just compute the perimeter of a rectangular window (twice the width plus twice the height) and realize that, with radiused corners, you'll end up with a little extra. (Specifically, I figure it should be (8-2pi)r extra...or about five extra inches if you have 3" radiusing. I guess you could also be a hero and compute the exact perimeter, but personally I'd prefer to overestimate slightly and have to trim a bit off than to end up with slightly too little.)

You can purchase this trim, which if I understand what you are describing, at some large dealers.I moved mine around so that any open spots are near or at the top of the window. Anywhere but the bollom so that most of any rain water will run off.

I figured it might have just shrank/shrunk, lol. Good to know though that it won't leak, especially since the size of the hole likely didn't happen over a couple month's time. Thanks so much.

Well the rubber seal has 'shrunk' for age and exposure.

Mine have been that way for several years.
I re-positioned first one by pulling/pushing seal around window until gap was closed up tight only to find it had shrunk again a few months later

I have thought about using some black caulking to fill gap but figure rubber seal would just shrink away from it on both ends leaving a glop of black caulking

Windows do not leak because glass is laid onto inner frame over a bead of silicone caulking then rubber seal (really a trim piece) installed.
