Slide goes out but not in

I first thought it was the solenoid. I changed that and it did the same thing. When I tapped the motor with a hammer it worked. Must be the motor then? I opened it up and cleaned it. It came in the first time but not again, even after tapping. I then changed the motor this morning. Went out and not back in. Anyone know what it could be?

Thanks in advance
Oliver
  • IT'S A 1996 Nash 28' 5th wheel with one living room slide.

Has a brand new electric motor and new solenoid.
Does it try to come in? it clicks once when switch is pressed.. has come in when tapping with hammer.
Does it make any noise at all?just the one click when button is pressed.
Does the motor get power when the switch is pressed? believe so.

    thanks for your time Guys
  • Oliver,

Without knowing what equipment you have one can only guess "things" that might be wrong.

If it's hydraulic it may have 2 solenoids.
I've never worked on an electric slide with a solenoid but have heard they exist.

And no, all solenoids aren't necessarily the same.

Someone not too long ago had one that was going out too far and hanging on the outside edge of the roller mechanism. Another guess.
  • Something that hasn't been determined yet, is your slide an electric powered slide or a hydraulic powered slide. Reason for asking is I have a hydraulic powered slide that does the same thing.
  • Would agree the ground sounds like it is probably OK. However, for clarity, my slide switch ground is to the chassis, just below where the switch is located so no, not a battery area ground.

Per your latest update, you should really test all + wires while switch is operated using a separate chassis ground.
  • I switched the wiring on the solenoid yesterday. It still goes out and not in(I know weird right) The solenoid is new. A solenoid is a solenoid right? It's not an exact replacement but they do the same thing don't they?

    Thanks for your help
  • Ground is good. It works one way. Ground is the same. Check selinoid while spouse pushes sw. If it does not work it it probably is in the wiring. Just for a n other check, try switching the wires on the selenoid and see if it comes in when out button is pushed.
  • Thanks Guys,

I did reverse the wiring on the switch and the same thing happened oddly..still out no in. I will check the ground today. I'm guessing this would be in around the batteries?

Should certainly be checked and also the switch will have it's own ground which should be checked too. The switches frame connected ground may have loosened and caused intermittent connectivity which could result in an inconsistent working behavior.

  • It may be something as simple as a bad switch. Have you checked the wires on the slide in/out button?
