Slow slide in one direction?

Hello,
I have a 29' 2008 Winnebago Access class C on a ford chassis. It has what I would call a mini slide out (dinette only). Lately it has started being very slow to extend the slide, sometimes not making it all the way, and a friend has go outside and help pull to get it to extend fully. I would think the motor is going bad, but when I retract the slide, it pulls in with no problems. I would have thought if the motor was going bad it would be weak in both directions. I crawled under for a look, and everything appears to be fine, with nothing showing signs of impeding the extension. I sprayed everything with slide out lube, it may have helped a little but it still seems weak. Battery charge is good, plus I keep the engine running while operating the slide. I have used the manual hand crank to extend it just to see if I could feel any binding anywhere, but it felt smooth with no drastic changes in resistance. The slide out motor is a kwikee products part# 1820111. I have seen them online for $350~$450. I don't mind replacing, but would like to know for sure it is the motor before I do. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for any responses or information.
  • I wonder if there's resistance in the switch or a poor crimp or other connection someplace.
  • You do not state if you have a slide cover. A Slide Cover will cause slow extension and then HELP retraction from its springs. So, I will bet you do indeed have a weak motor. The quickest way to find out is to run a good battery direct to the 2 motor wires and see if the problem remains. IF it does the motor is bad. If it does NOT, then further checking is required. But, odds are it is the motor. Doug
  • Thanks for the quick replies. It does have a slide cover, I hadn't thought about that. I'll try the battery test soon.
  • is there a way to disconnect or release the slide cover (with out a whole lot of work)

then it should be equal torque going each way
a little faster going out and the same speed coming back (slower than now)

just a thought, i don't have slide outs
  • I'm not sure, I've never looked too close at the slide cover mechanism. I will look in to it as well.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.
  • I'm with Doug, the motor is probably getting weak
Taking the slide cover load off
Is just a temporary fix, besides being a motor condition test if it operated better that way
  • Thanks again for the responses, I have some things to try now to help narrow down the issue.
