sticky awning

our 2006 Itasca has a manual awning from a and e, model number848ea16.401.
half the time when we wish to open it the left hand upright says, "no thanks I am quite comfy here thank you" and we have to rattle it a few times before it moves out.
I dont think there are any catches at the top, so what is sticking?
the roller unrolls fine.
the weather here in san diego is warm and fine so it is not humidity or cold that is the problem.
thanks all
  • Mine always did the same thing. I just used the metal awing handle to pull it loose. It was always the left side. When I did a close look, it was because the bar rubbed a little bit due to not being installed perfectly plumb.
  • I think it has to do with how it is installed. I had some work done on mine (carefree that I converted from spring to crank operated) and discovered that the top bracket was a bit too close for where it should be. Moved it over about 1/2 inch and the thing works so much better.

Yes, mine too. I think wannavolunteerFT has the answer.
  • My manual awning would hang up because fabric had shifted on roller.
This would cause awning to roll up cockeyed and sometimes it would not stow properly and sometimes it would not release and extend properly.

Fabric in top rail is held in place by screw at each end of material into track......no shifting.
But on roller no such screws so fabric can move inside grove on roller.

I repositioned awning material so that edge of fabric was same distance from end of roller tube. Then installed a short shelf tapping screw right at edge of fabric into roller grove.

Haven't had an awning stowing/extending issue since.
  • Take a good look where the 'bottom' of the arm attaches to the side of your RV. Check to see if it wobbles or the bolts are coming loose.

These bolts only go thru the subfloor which is particle board and very thin. These bolts start getting loose and when you bring the awning down and up it's slop is just enough not to be to unhook the top of the arm. Or in the case of going up it will not lock in properly. Usually if you push arm up just a little it will unhook.

My mobile RV repair sees a ton of these. Fix is going inside and putting steel plate a screwing outside bolts to them. Check to see if those bolts on the bottom of the awning arms to see if they are getting loose!

Sadly on one of mine the bottome of the arm attached right at the side seamline along my MH and it pulled it away allowing water to seep into the floor. :{ Mine became loose during high winds and I never noticed it until it started hanging and wouldn't lock on top or come down.

Ours stuck on the left side too before replacing the awning fabric. Look at the arms on the left side, is the outer/bottom arm rubbing against the upper arm when closing. As mentioned shifted fabric will do it. Ours works perfect since we replaced the fabric.
