And on a different note, Progressive Dynamics was already building a similar converter that had temperature sensing and variable float voltage, back in 1971. I own one of these beasts, a PD-808 and it operates like a brick. Typical float voltage at 70f is 13.5-13.6 V Bulk voltage can be as high as 15V, 14.2->14.4 V being the common absorption stage. The one I have has an add-on daughter board that variates the charge voltage. Temp compensation and current limiting is done in the power supply section. I didn't have the heart to open it up and investigate, fully. I can see through the vents the separate rectifying plate and the big chunk of transformer. That's all I needed to know as long as it operates correctly.
If anyone needs information about these early PD converters, I have the manual for the PD-807/808 and a PD service manual that covers some of their early products. I can email the .pdf files.
