Toilet base seal

Has anyone used a residential type wax ring on the floor for there thetford RV toilet.
I can't seam to get the foam gasket to seal. The one that came out was about 1/2" thick and the replacement was about a inch thick. Both leaked after a short time. I did have it tight to the floor.

I, also, suspect over-tightening of the toilet to the floor. Like was said, tighten until it doesn't wobble, then MAYBE another 1/8 turn. Tighten both sides evenly, a little at a time then switch to the other side.

Over-tighting will cause foam seal to distort and not seal

Toilet base area and floor flange area just need to be clean and then toilet should sit flush on floor and hold down nuts snug so toilet doesn't wobble


There is a reason RV toilets don't come with a 'wax ring'
Heat it will ooze out from under toilet and down into down pipe
Road vibration will cause it to break down

The wax seal will fail due to vibrations while underway. The wax will be compressed away from the toilet outlet, and has no resilience to expand back into place. Make sure you're using the correct seal for your brand/model toilet and that the mating surfaces are clean for a good seal. Proper tightening of the base bolts is also important. Follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.
