Info is scarce and no pictures so I'm only guessing
But it sounds like it is mounted on gas lifts
And the push button, is for a latch release, kinda lie the push button for the trunk on some cars
The latch broke, or the switch wiring is shorted and staying unlocked
These are usually momentary duty, so if the switch stuck the unlock solenoid will burn out then not open
It does sound like the spring behind the latch or the latch lever has broken
You will have to get inside the cabinet to check this out
I can explain it to you.
