water heater

I have an atwood water heater,Gas only. The other day when i started my water heater it ran like an hour or more without shutting off.Constant flame the whole time. After this period it started weeping water from the relief valve than it started to pour. Finally it shut down.Anyone have any ideas?
  • Weeping at PRV is an indication that air pocket has been lost......

Pouring out of PRV indicates t-stats have failed to shut down heating.

Normal t-stat is preset to OPEN at 140*F
ECO (high temp t-stat) is preset to OPEN at 180*F
PRV is preset to OPEN at 210*F/150# (resets at 125#)

Weeping is common.......pouring out is not but that is way the PRV is there...safety device to relieve high pressure.

T-stats not held tight against tank wall will not allow them to sense the correct temp.
Best to just replace the set.....clean tank surface before installing new t-stats and make sure they are held tight and connections are clean/tight on t-stat terminals.

Started it on electric or gas??? Sounds like an overt temperature situation...

faulty t stat most likely... ( Note, I am a plummberand come across this daily)
The unit is gas only.It takes like an hour of constant running before this happens. That is when the water is completly cold.If i restart it might take like 20 or 30min.
