Weather stations

Finally come around to the realization that a weather station which links to the national weather system, This early I can't think of the name, is more than a toy, here in the desert.
What weather station requiring the fewest or no holes, in the roof, color display, radar, storm warning etc is out there?

I had a weather station back at the sticks'n'bricks and enjoyed geeking out with it.

I think it depends on your idea of "forecast".

I've been using barometers to give me a "forecast" for the next days weather for decades. I have found things like a dial barometer and the "Captain's Glass" water barometer to be far more accurate for the next days weather than standard weather forecasts.

I listen to the radio (and internet weather sites) all the time for weather for the upcoming week.

Find what works for you, and go camping!

There are also some weather monitors that link to the WWW and show you what NOAA says the weather should be... or it listens to NOAA radio (like 162.55MHz is one of the stations all of 'em are close to that) and work great if you are in range.. Not so great if you are not. Same as Weather Radios

I have multiple Weather Capable Radios here.. One is dedicated. the others are "General Coverage"

Here is mine. No power or connectivity required. Drips when raining. Points direction of wind. Tells wind velocity. Blows away in a storm.

completely agree. been preaching that for years. we have one in the house and the MH each on an external antenna, but the geek in me loves toys and this personal wx station looks cool.

"Weather stations" don't link to anything. They show current conditions where you are. No warnings, nada. They don't warn you that a line of tornados or heavy snowfall is heading your way etc.

A weather radio gives you voice forecasts, local and wide-area, and alerts for most anything you could think of. You just need to be in range. To me a weather radio is a necessity.

This is the radio I have. It has a connector for an external antenna. If you have an FM radio antenna on the roof you can get a y-connector and connect this to it along with your FM radio.

If you have consistent internet access you can use the NWS site.

And I use Radarscope for the earliest storm information available.

Davis Instruments. Have had several - very good quality. They can be had in wireless models and you can clamp the sensor system to the ladder with a short pole.

agree. does anyone have any real-world experience with it? is the 1โ€ pole mount a screw-on type or compression with screws or bolts?

We have 3 weather "systems" at our house...

One Olde-fashiony dial type barometer, which works pretty good.

A LaCrosse "weather station" with an outdoor sensor. Works okay, not as good as I'd like.

A "water glass". Where the colored water goes up and down a narrow tube. Astoundingly accurate! Easily 85% accurate for tomorrows weather.

ALL THREE of these "systems" are more accurate that the weatherperson on radio or TV.

I work outside, so I am always aware of the weather forecast.
