What should getting wheel bearings packed cost?

I have a 2017 Grand Design 27RL 5th wheel. I contacted a local service center to inquire about getting my wheel bearings packed. I was quoted $490 for this service.

I had another place that has since closed that used to take care of my old 5th wheel and I never had to pay anything close to that. Now that he has retired I am forced to find another place to deal with.

What should I expect to pay for this service?

Thanks!

Who are you asking?
I believe it's a rhetorical question.

Yeah, that is pretty darn expensive.

I see you are in PA, you do not have to take your trailer to a RV dealer for your PA Inspection.

Most PA Inspection stations/Mechanics can inspect your trailer, they may also offer to clean and repack your bearings at a better price while they are inspecting your trailer if you ask about it..

Call around to some of your local PA State Inspection stations and ask if they can inspect Travel Trailers.. Then ask what they would charge to service/grease your trailers bearings.

Or, learn to do it yourself, not all that hard but takes some time and is messy.. Takes me about 15 minutes per drum or about an hr for two axle trailer.. Wished I was making $490 per hr..

Over the for a winter, I had the bearings repacked, new brakes and backing plates on all 4 wheels for around $450.

Just got it done at Les Schwab. Cost $170 per axle plus tax. This included new bearing seals which typically are replaced when bearings are packed. They also inspected/adjusted the brakes and greased the suspension wet bolts for free.

It used to cost about $100 per axle plus tax, but a couple of years ago they discovered they were charging way below the competition (which I verified) and raised their rates a bunch.

I don't like the price increase, but they seem to do a good job.

your friendly guy next door will do it for $couple hundred bucks. heck if you were close to me ,we,d just do it. I don,t drink but a cold pepsi will do it. or a mom/pop garage in the area.

Or a local trailer dealer/shop (not RV).

When we had a trailer, we used Les Schwabs and they were very reasonable. I'm sure you don't have a Les Schwab Tire Center in PA but you might check your local tire dealers.

First, do not go to an RV dealer for this simple service. Any good mechanic can do a better job for less money. Just look at the shop rate and ask yourself if that is fair when you consider the lowest paid employee will be messing with your trailer.

Around here it is around $100.00 per axle, including brake adjustment.
