What would you delete?

I bought a 2014 Dodge Ram 2500, with the Cummins diesel, about a year ago. It was from Canada, so when I titled it in Michigan, I lost the factory warranty. ( Seemed odd to me, but I have made all the calls to the company in Canada and US). I love how it runs (had a Ford 6L before this, enough said) but want to hold onto this for a while so I figure should find out what deletes will give most benefit. Not worried about more power, but a little mpg would be great. The biggest thing is about improving longevity. It has 47K on it now, so it seems to be a good time to do the delete. Thanks for any ideas.

A 14 is not going to have any inherent issues with soot build up.

Many engine mods, such as tuners and deleting pollution controls, will generally result in less reliability and longevity.

Wow, amazed at all the responses, thanks to all. First, regarding my 6L Ford, I did not have anything deleted (to my dismay) and paid the price when the head gaskets blew in St. Ignace. I did find someone to tow my 5er home, no problem. The biggest thing I wonder about with my Cummins is soot build-up. The egr in the Ford was first domino that led to the head gasket blow out and dont ever want to go through that again. Just want to make sure the soot build up (there must be some) won't be an issue. I do have the engine brake on all the time and most of my runs on on the expressway, not many short trips. Finally, there is not currently and emission testing required where I live (Michigan).

Check out Turbo Diesel Register, you’ll learn everything you need to know about Ram/Cummins trucks over there. I can tell you though that the general consensus at TDR is to leave the newer ones alone. Older trucks like mine, totally different story but with a 2014, they will strongly recommend not deleting anything. Also, as the newer ones are very solid to begin with, there probably isn’t much that will need to be upgraded.

Deleting and bulletproofing are not the same thing. Deleting almost always means disabling or removing emission control devices. Bulletproofing has become synonymous with the Ford 6.0s and refers to improving egr and oil cooler systems to prevent head gasket failures. Sadly every CL and Ebay ad now states that 6.0 Ford diesel trucks for sale have been bulletproofed but gee they don't have any proof of it being done or for the parts if they did it themselves. Or they use the term for GMs and Rams that never needed it in the first place.

That was my thinking as well and I still do good maintenance. But I started losing power coming home from Indianapolis and decided to have the engine bulletproofed because it was running pretty bad by the time I got home. It’s a beast again and I’m told that it’s now a preferred engine when the troubles are removed. Time will tell.

Doesnt your state require your truck to pass emmisions test?

If you delete anything emision control related you would be stinking up air more,,not something Id recomend doing,,
Did you know every year 7 milion people die from polution related ilnesses?
What if it was someone in your family, would you stil enjoy "rolling coal" like so many diesel drivers do..

I like the recent quieter, lower odor and no smoke that is the current crop of diesels. I doubt that I will ever delete anything. But the Ram truck in question may be one of the model years that had some issues. To just ignore it might be the irresponsible choice. The OP needs to study the issue, as I said before, and after gathering the information make an intelligent decision. If someone has firsthand experience, that could be considered.

2014 Ram Cummins is an extremely solid platform. I enjoy my quiet truck with no smell and as a result I don’t plan on changing anything unless I have trouble with the emissions components out of warranty.

OP, drive the truck in tow/haul mode with the exhaust brake on at all times, try to limit grocery getting, and work it hard and you will be very happy with it! :B

I am in the camp of those who would no delete. Especially important if you live in an area that requires emissions testing.

not a truck guy but I am curious...what is a 'delete'?

The actual "delete" varies by model and vintage, but it involves removing or replacing problematic and/or performance robbing components in the engine. Examples of some of the modifications are mentioned in this post. Another related term is "bulletproofing".
