Wiring Generator to Transfer Switch via Current Protector

I just purchased a Champion 4000/3500 (no Honda vs Yamaha vs Champion or quiet vs. too much noise please). In my 07 KC Montego Bay, I have gen prep which includes: front box to place gen in and what appears to be an Onan harness. I have a Lycht auto transfer switch and a Safeguard Generator Supplemental Over Current Protection box.

The RV already has the wire ran from the transfer switch to the Protection Box which is mounted in the rear of the metal front generator compartment where an onboard gen would set.

I want to wire in a 30 amp cord so that I don't have to use the rear corner 50 amp cord with an adapter plugged into the generator. Thought that I would run a shorter cord from the generator compartment to the Champion and leave it in the truck bed.

In popping off the cover to the Safeguard Protector, the wire coming from the transfer switch has: 1 red; 1 black; and 1 white wire. The red and black attach to the Protector and have 2 short capped Black leads/wires coming off of that. The white is just capped off and attaches to nothing.

The 30 amp wire I want to use only has 1 black and 1 white and 1 green wire. Obviously, the white goes to white.

First question, what do I do with the green (ground?).

Second question, which of the 2 black leads from the Safeguard do I wire the black cord wire to: either or both?

Searched but couldn't find an answer, and my RV electrician buddy is unavailable.

Thanks

Update - thanks to the answer, I tried both black wires from the protector to the one black from the 30 amp wire going to the generator (white to white and green to ground). I fired up the generator and tried both the front and the rear AC,,,either one will work off the generator. I didn't try anything else while running the AC, however. While using the generator, I plan on using propane for the Hot Water and the Norcold. It will or will not run the Microwave,,if not, then I will just switch the AC off the few times, we need to use it.

    Thanks Bobbo!

    You are quite welcome.

I can only answer what you do with the Green.. Tape it off, you don't need it.

Unless he uses this 30 amp cord to plug into a 30 amp outlet on a campground pedestal. It would work for that wonderfully, but needs the ground attached. Since his generator is a floating neutral, having the green wire grounded has no effect when on the generator, but doesn't hurt a thing.

  • Depending on how your rig is wired, there are two possible answers.

    Answer 1:

You must connect the black wire of the 30 amp cord to both of the black wires of the protection box or you will only get power to 1/2 of your 50 amp rig.

Connect the white wire of the protection box to the white wire of the 30 amp cord.

Connect the green wire to the MH frame.

    Answer 2:

One of the two black wires in the protection box goes only to the second air conditioner while the other black wire runs the remainder of the MH. Connect the black wire of the 30 amp cord to the one that goes to the rest of the MH and leave the wire going only to the second A/C disconnected. Your generator won't run both A/C's anyway.

Connect the white wire of the protection box to the white wire of the 30 amp cord.

Connect the green wire to the MH frame.

Personally, I believe answer 2 is the one. The way I would approach it is to connect to only one of the protection box black wires, fire it up, and go inside to see what works. If only one A/C works and nothing else, you picked the wrong black wire. If everything BUT one A/C works, you are golden. If only 1/2 of the rig's 120v circuits work, you need both wires.

One benefit of your solution is that you will never need a 30 amp to 50 amp dogbone. If you are camped where they only have a 30 amp outlet, pull out your 30 amp plug and plug it in. The RV will never know it isn't hooked up to your generator. This is one reason why it is crucial that you hook the green wire to the MH frame!!! A second reason is if you discover that you must "bond" the generator so an energy management system will work properly. Do a search on "generator bonding" for hours of reading if you get an "open ground" error message while trying to use the generator.
