new 2024
Well, the 2012 X5 35d BMW SUV is at 175,000 miles, and while still going strong, the wife-mate has been jonesing for a pick up for years, and is deeply concerned that just maybe it's time to retire i...
Well, actually, when I posted that last one, I had only put 4,000 miles on it, but I digress.
At 4,260 miles, I got rear ended. The video from my rear facing dash cam shows the little white car Waaaaaaaaay back there as I slowed to a stop on the highway to make a left turn. Speed limit in that area is 55, and driver had at least 10 seconds warning before impact, and did slow down some. The story was saw a stop was needed, put arm out to keep dog in passenger seat from hitting the dash. But then evidently forgot about the stopping part.
Anyway, damage to truck is about $14,000. No one was injured, although dog did still hit the dashboard, no doubt with less force than it might have. For a number of reasons, including fighting with insurance, parts availability, and getting scheduled into body shop for repairs, we may not have use of the truck until mid-August.
I guess this proves we just can't have nice things, eh?
Well, final verdict is in: The almost-brand-spankin-new truck is a total. The frame is bent badly, and my insurance has picked up where the under insured other driver's insurance called it quits. I took the advice of my insurer to let them total it, accepted the check yesterday, and now begins the search for a new truck.
The other driver had the minimum allowable (in Virginia) coverage of $20,000 with Elephant, which took them a whole month to decide they were out on. I'm with Farm Bureau, and they took less than a week to come back saying due to the bent frame, they had to call it a total.
I gotta tell y'all, really cheap insurance with a company like Elephant is only cheap, it is not good, nor speedy. It's proof of that old adage, you can only have two of the three: good, fast, cheap. I'm heartened that Virginia evidently raised the minimum coverage to $30K as of July 1 this year. But, still, what sort of cheapskate carries only the minimum when it is that low?
le Sigh
Bummer dude. But that look like the truck is still totally driveable.
go get a trailer place to slap a new hitch on it and hit the road.
hopefully you had a hitch in the receiver.
An exterrr long pintle hitch wards off rear Enders pretty well.
good luck. Terrible your new truck got smushed a little.
Yes, the truck is drivable. But the bumper now aims at the ground, both rear fenders are wrinkled, and the rear subframe is bent. Slapping a new hitch on it will neither work nor satisfy. Body shop says $14,000 damage. Being brand new I am now going to settle for a half-assed fix.
