My '03 failed at about 170k ... tried several times to repair it, finally took it to a 'specialist' and he rebuilt it with 'all new parts' for about $200 or so. The speedometer failed same time, and it was repaired, but the odometer read the same as is was, no change in miles when I got it back.

GM did have a recall, or repair for under a certain mileage (I forget what), and repaired a lot of them under extended warranty for free - I think up to 100k or something. Mine was too high.

But didn't GM know the issues existed but did nothing to fix it?

As I stated if a odometer is swapped out under State and Federal law this has to be disclosed and can devalue your vehicle. Do the work yourself and document the mileage and it's not a huge problem. If you disclose it you will take a huge hit on trade-in value. Sell it yourself and it probably won't be an issue. Don't disclose it and get caught and it could cost you a lot of money.

They must be pretty good if America has put GM on the top month after month. You would be surprised as they have surpassed Toyota for least problems per 100. Each company has their faults my buddies truck with almost 300,000 miles and original 4.3 and trans and runs like new. I think a bad connection in dash wont make jump to another. He has been very pleased with his truck he bought brand new
.

Another sales pitch....

BTW... I saw it coming! :B

If the guy with the bad odometer knows someone who can solder, likely all that is needed is to reflow the two rows of pins where the connector plugs in. I did that to my dad's '04 when it would intermittently not power up at all and it fixed it. This was after he had gotten it back from an Internet guy who replaced the servos and supposedly fixed any power supply issues.

BO they all do the same thing, yes even the all mighty imports! The Japanese Imports all directed their dealers to leave RO's (repair orders) open so that it looked like their vehicles had very few repairs. Internal documents ended up biting them in the butt during a Dealer dispute over warranty claims. But the sheep still think they are all that and a bag of chips.

Car makers are in such a hurry to one up each other that they no longer do a thorough job of testing their in products. Couple that computer generated testing (not just the Auto Industry here) and you can understand why we are having so many issues. Everyone is now a Bata Tester now a days.

Interesting how GM could have problems like this along with fuel pumps, intake manifold gasket leaks, rear brakes that wouldn't adjust and more and just didn't care. they kept selling their junk and making money off people that had to get it repaired...I sure hope they're a better company now than they were 10 years ago when all I drove was GM products.

X2 cheap and very plentiful. Some will even input your currant mileage.

Note: it is Federal law that you disclose that the cluster/odometer was replaced even if the replacement has the correct mileage! There will be a sticker that comes with the rebuilt cluster that needs to be attached to the drivers door. Just a heads up.

Don

Not so. I sent my wife's in and the mileage was untouched. They didn't provide a sticker because it was the same cluster, just repaired.
Key here is YOU sent it out not a dealer. So you can claim that you did not know of the law and as such you were not "knowingly" committing a crime.
Dave

When mine went out while in warranty, they called in he current mileage and the new one came with the correct mileage on it. I was told I could not drive more than 200 miles while waiting on the new cluster or they would have to send it back to get the mileage reset. I don't know if this was the law or because of the warranty tracking.

I was never told about the 200 mile thing but the sticker was due to State not Federal regulations. There are both State and Federal laws covering this.

Funny Ford had to replace mine under warranty in my 1990 F-150 XLT and they placed a sticker on the drivers door below the MFG sticker stating the odometer was replaced and at what mileage it was replaced. The mileage was sent at the time the odometer was ordered and that was the mileage that was on the replacement odometer. During the lemon law buy back I marked the Title as "mileage unknown" and this sent Fords Lawyer through the roof. When asked why I did this I stated that Brondes Ford had replaced the odometer but still let me drive the truck for almost two weeks. So the true and correct mileage is unknown and I'm not going to comment fraud for you!

Link with a lot of good info
Once the odometer is repaired you would be required to complete an odometer disclosure statement, attach it directly to the title, and keep a copy for a minimum of five years.
Be very aware of a vehicle that someone is trying to sell you if it is less than ten years old with the odometer not functioning.

I took mine out and had a local shop rebuild it. It cost a couple hundred to have them do it but got the truck back on the road the same day. Not a big deal.
