1/3 United States Trip

Just into my 7th day on my tour of the eastern U.S.. Stopped at my first campsite last night to refill water and dump. This trip is solo so far but my wife is meeting up with me for a couple weeks while in the south to enjoy the weather. My 7 x 16 enclosed trailer hauls with the rig better than by itself. The fenders are just wide enough that I can see it backing up and hitching up is a breeze. After the big trip last year having the enclosed trailer is awesome. A ezhauler all aluminum with the barn doors. I made two ramps that when put together are 59 inches wide. With 2 extra thirties in the trailer burning propane for the generator is not a issue. Got 21 hours of run time this trip so far. There is little difference in mpg with trailer on as well. Average of 13 mpg in my gmc diesel is about right. That is a 72 mph average on the big road which I really avoid. Once out of Florida I am turning west to Louisiana and see some friends I made out there then north to Michigan. do some ice fishing then back east to New York. This dream I am living out has been only possible by going back to a TC.

    I find that I loose about 1 mpg towing my trailer. If its just my truck and trailer I loose about 5 mpg. The camper does all the work breaking the wind, the trailer runs in the draft. The 1 mpg comes from the rolling resistance of the extra set of tires and the pulling force on the hitch itself. Thats my scientific answer. To the OP if you are coming up here to ice fish you may want to throw a 300 lber in that trailer cold as its been up here lately. Gas auger too.

    It is interesting how you guys are saying there isn't that big a difference in mpg towing... I guess it is because of the truck camper setup?

    When I drive on the highway not towing, I get ~15mpg. When I hook up my dual axle 21' travel trailer my mpg drops 30%, to ~10mpg.

    Don't mean to hijack this thread, and I also vote for pictures of your trip! lol

    There are times when we take along our Yamaha side X side so we have to pull the trailer. But I still would much rather have just the truck and TC. Love the maneuverability without having to pull along a trailer. The best I can figure is about a 1 mpg difference with the trailer.

    Good trip,im also looking to get a trailer to pull behind truck camper.For the long trips,storage is tough in truck campers.Possibly want to bring the kayaks with the trailer,but they are 14ft,might have to find some smaller ones.Also kicking the idea around of towing a small pickup with camper top on it. That would be storage, and vehicle to tour around all in one.
