2014 Chevy navagation question

My daughter and SIL was in this weekend and they were talking about how bad the navagation was in his truck (2014 1500 LTZ). They were telling me that it doesn't put a map on the screen with info. It just tells you when to turn with an arrow. The said you have to call Onstar and tell them where you want to go to enter in a destination. I called BS and looked for myself and sure enough when you hit the NAV button on the screen it tells you that you have no destination entered to call Onstar.

Those of you that have GM's, is this normal NAV or does he simple not have navigation in his truck? My 2005 Vette had normal NAV just like my Ram that had an actual map and options.

Sounds like they do not have nav and using onstar as a work around.
  • Exactly as Mich said, does the vehicle have Navigation built in? Navigation for that year was an upgrade/option and was not standard, even on the LTZ model. Only in 2015 was Navigation starting to become standard on LTZ's. Now, when you turn on the radio and go to the home screen, is the "Navigation" icon showing (grayed out) and is the Sirius/XM also showing (grayed out or color)? If so, that radio has the capability of being upgraded to the GM navigation system. There are modules you can buy from GM and install yourself, or you can have the dealer install it if you're not comfortable taking parts of the dash apart, and there are third part modules. It is also possible they have the navigation in the system just turned it off in the settings and are using OnStar, which is just displaying the turn by turn similar to when navigation is being displayed on the gauge display. If this was new purchase, their window sticker would clearly state "MyLink with Navigation" on the features. They can also log into the Chevrolet Owners website portal and it would show them exactly what radio system is installed in their vehicle.
  • Thank you for your responses. I will pass this on and try to follow up with what the verdict is.

I dont remember if the navigation icon was gray or not but I do know it response when you hit the icon. It just tells you to go to OnStar to enter a route.
  • If they have a newer cell phone...download a free maps app and it will be current with latest maps all the time.

Yeah, that's what I do in my service truck but I have to run the turn by turn through bluetooth to be able to hear it over the radio (radio mutes automatically) but what sux about that is I have to play a bluetooth app for music while the radio is in bluetooth. Also it never fails that someone will call me when I get close to my destination and need the navigation the most. Lol just happened to me the other day.

I find that the phone apps are not nearly as helpful when you are on multi lane highways looking for a ramp. My truck shows you which lane you need to be in to get to the ramp. Sux finding out that you have to get over 3 lanes in bumper to bumper traffic in a quarter mile and you are almost 90' long. HAHAHA.
  • I have a 2014 3500 LTZ, and while the nav system is nice to have, I find using google maps on my phone is so much nicer. Maps are real time and are updated, and notify me about construction or accidents on google maps. I believe if I want to update the map on my nav system, I would have to buy a cd and install the update with the latest map version. Those updates sell around the neighborhood of $150-200. OUCH.
  • My truck gives me real time updates like construction zones and accidents and offers to reroute. It also does tolls and displays current speed limits. I've confirmed the speed limit a few times and it pretty accurate. When I pass a speed limit sign it changes within a second or two. Also does construction zone speed limits. I do need to update the map though because I find times I'm driving through fields on the map. Lol
  • I have a 2015 Chev with the Nav option. Biggest waste of money I've had in awhile. On top of everything else they want over a hundred dollars to update it every year. I rarely use it and use my Tom-tom instead.

    B.O.
  • Their truck doesn’t have Navigation installed. As Stated, on star is a work around.

IMHO, the Nav I used in a 2015 Suburban should be very similar and it was garbage. Literally the hardest interface on a GPS I have ever used. They are not really missing anything.

A nice stand alone GPS such as the Garmin with the DriveSmart option is pretty sweet. Plus the GPS gets up in your line of vision and is so much easier to see while driving, I use mine as a HUD all the time.

    Thanks!
