2014 Ram back up camera

The 2014 Ram back up cameras are built in to the tailgate handle. Which doesn't help at all if you are removing the tailgate for your camper.

A quick look around on the Net did not reveal an aftermarket plug and play camera that will simply plug in to the existing Ram system, that can bolt elsewhere on the rear of truck when the camper would be in the bed.

What have you guys found? (Besides installing an entire new back up camera system).

Cheers

IT WORKS!!!

So it is NOT part #68200274-AA. That part number is a six pin plug/wiring harness and everything on the back of the truck is eight pins.

Not it! That is the 10 foot extension that is intended to run to the back of a chassis model however, I believe the reason it is only six pins is because it doesn't need the additional wires for the locking tailgate.

So you need the entire OEM wiring harness which is part #68189124-AB and #68224929-AA. One connects to the truck bed (after you have removed the tailgate) and then the other completes the connection to the camera (which is normally INSIDE the tailgate). Don't ask why they needed to make this harness in to two pieces. Don't think that was necessary but that's what made it work.

I labeled the harnesses with letters so it's easier to show them to you. A and C comes together as 68224929-AA. You discard C as you don't need it for anything (except maybe spare parts). B is normally the part that is inside your tailgate. I have already installed the camera (part number 56038978-A3) at the end of harness B.

I plugged everything in and I have confirmed rear camera image on my in dash display. Yay! So now all I have to do is strip off the unnecessary wire harness which is for the power lock on the tail gate, fashion a mount for the outside of my camper, duplicating the height and angle of the existing camera, hide all the ugly wires in a conduit of some sort, and it will be beer time!

Hi Mello Mike: Can you give me the name of the wireless camera you purchased and approximate cost. Was there anything special about the camera - I was just thinking to purchase a wireless camera from Megellan as that is my navigator. Their cost is around $150.00. cheers

I think you're being a bit unfair here. It's unreasonable to think that a barely-above-minimum-wage inexperienced kid would have first-hand knowledge of each and every one of the 10's of thousands of parts that go into the dozens of models of vehicles.

How you word your question has a lot to do with it too. When you ask them about a "jafoffinator" and the proper term for it is "kerplunkatron" how are they supposed to make the connection? Some clever grizzled old parts guy might be able to figure out what you want but guys like that are too smart to work for what dealers are paying.

I'd like to see how some of you guys would handle that same job. Not just this one isolated incident, but dealing with dozens of customers on a day-in-day-out basis.

Just received the 6820 0274 AA wire harness and it is a different sized connector compared to what's on my 2014 3500 Ram. So it does not work. The parts guy at the dealership is stumped. Obviously the part exists, there is one on my truck but you think we can order a replacement ? Nope. Lol.

The bodybuilder document assumes a chassis cab. You may have a tailgate power lock and camera so it's a different connector. If so you need to get the tailgate harness as Bedlam suggested. At this point if you have the camera and a harness to the 6-pin?? connector you just need the first part of the tailgate harness (the second part is a jumper from the first to the camera and power tailgate lock). On my 2014 Laramie its 68224929AA from what I understand. That will get you the mating connector on the plastic plate (like the one hanging off your unused tailgate). You'll need to cut this cable and other one you bought and reassemble with the camera end from your 6820027AA cable and the chassis connector from the 68224929AA cable. Add as short of an extension as you need. Make sense?

In theory you can also buy that 10-pin?? tailgate connector from Mouser an electronics wholesaler but they had no stock when I was looking a few months ago.

I do not have the camera option on my Tradesman trim RAM with UConnect 3.0, so I don't know what the connector looks like other than the picture in the link I posted. Along these same lines, I would think you could buy a tailgate wire harness and camera for your year Ram. The harness could easily be cut and extended to any length you need within reason (video signal degradation at some point).

I've purchased the kit that Bedlam suggested about a year ago for my 2013 truck. The connector does not plug into its mate that is on the truck (where the tailgate plugged in).

I looked at the schematics with the RAM parts dept. fellow and could not find anything in their catalog that looked like it would work.

Only $80 for the OEM camera, you could buy a couple for different applications:

The 30' cable is about $75-100.

I actually ran into Ram dealers that didn't even know Ram made a chassis cab when I was shopping for mine. I almost bought another Ford because the lack of quality Ram dealers in my area. The Ford fleet guys are much better versed which hurts Ram in this market.

This is great! I wonder if you can connect the 10 and 30 ft cables? Now a need a universal mounting system where I can attach a base to the tc, trailer etc and move the camera overtime I am towing something different..
