I think you're being a bit unfair here. It's unreasonable to think that a barely-above-minimum-wage inexperienced kid would have first-hand knowledge of each and every one of the 10's of thousands of parts that go into the dozens of models of vehicles.
How you word your question has a lot to do with it too. When you ask them about a "jafoffinator" and the proper term for it is "kerplunkatron" how are they supposed to make the connection? Some clever grizzled old parts guy might be able to figure out what you want but guys like that are too smart to work for what dealers are paying.
I'd like to see how some of you guys would handle that same job. Not just this one isolated incident, but dealing with dozens of customers on a day-in-day-out basis.
