2014 Toyota Highlander XLE - can I add a Brake Box?

We have the dealer installed hitch and 4pin harness. Trailer we want to pull has the 7 pin and brakes. Toyota does not offer a 7 pin for the Highlander (silly to offer a 5000# tow rating without a 7 pin??). Called 4 different local hitch companies and have 2 very different answers. 2 places say no problem! The other 2 places refused to specifically wire the brake box saying that it may/will interfere with the computer system of the car. Has anyone added a 7 pin and brake box to the Highlander? I would really appreciate your feedback. Thanks in advance.

To complete the sale, the dealer will get a 7-pin and controller working for you. Have fun.

Thanks everyone. Yes, I did mean brake controller. I also saw places like etrailer offer them (for my model they say) but having 2 wiring guys warn of problems with all of those new computer systems has made me question... We've got a call in with the dealer now. I've seen on line that even that answer will depend on what service tech you are talking too. Was just curious to know if anyone has actually attempted it yet with a 2014 and had success. Thanks again.

Not sure what a "Brake Box" is ...

DirecLink offers a controller for 2008 and newer Toyota vehicles:

Don't know about the 2014 for sure, but my 2008 was not difficult to get wired for a brake controller. My manual specifies trailer brakes required if towing over 1000 lb.

I guess you could call a Toyota dealer and ask them. If they say 'sure, no problem,' you know it will not mess up the computer. Then go to a shop with a lower price that also says 'no problem'.
