It starts to become a matter of diminishing returns at some point. Personally I wouldn't want a tranny that's always hunting between gears as that is what an 8-speed is going to do. 6-speeds seem more than enough to me but what do I know

You do know that GM/Ford has a joint development project to design and build both a 9 and 10 speed transmission for SUVs/Trucks/etc
