2015 Overland Expo West

Just wanted to see if anyone was planning on organizing something for the 2015 Overland Expo West like they did last year? We had hoped to have been able to attend but couldn't at the last minute, so we would really like to attend this year since I'm retired now. Also if anyone who attended last year could comment on their experience and if they found it to be worth it or not would also be appreciated.

I think that Brian organized the space with the OX people? Am I right? I believe its not too difficult to get a camping area set aside for truck campers. However, it is very difficult to keep the area exclusively for TCs. We'd awake in the morning with bikers, tent campers, carousers and others that had moved in overnight. Nice folks for the most part....but they split our camp up pretty thoroughly.

If Brian is not doing it then try to get in touch with Roseann and Jonathan Hansan who are the proprietors of OX.

You will be stunned by the mass of expedition vehicles and the tough smart folks who attend the Expo. Great exhibits by TC vendors such as Lance, 4Wheel, and others. You'll learn more in 3 days than in a year otherwise. Best of luck.

G'day,

I will be at Overland Expo West this year. Looking forward to meeting up with fellowTruck Campers.

In Australia I have Ram 3500 4x4 & Eagle Cap 1160, but in US, I have just had built a Yellow Ford e350 4x4 Sportsmoblie EB50 floorplan with penthouse for touring the US, cuurrently in storage at Sportsmobile West, Fresno, CA.

Sportsmobile will be in US for 18 months, for 3-4 trips then off to Europe/UK/Vietnam/New Zealand, eventually permanently based in in Australia, for serious offroad use.

Arriving 10th May and leaving US 20th June 2015 for this trip.

Looking forward to meeting up.

That's what I did in 2012. I stopped at Bryce Canyon on the way down, then at Grand Canyon after OX.

I wanted to go to The Lake Tahoe area, but the weather turned bad, and part way there I turned around and went home.

I am planning on driving out from IN for the 2015 OX. I may only stay for one day however and then spend the rest of my vacation traveling up through UT and CO. Looking forward to it. I would like to camp with the other truck campers as well.

We made it out to Flagstaff last year and were glade we did. It was great to meet up with all the rv.net'rs and see the show.

We left there and drove up to the Grand Canyon North Rim. Spent a fantastic night camping at Point Sublime. Imagine camping with the Grand Canyon right outside your back door...incredible. Toured the North Rim over the next couple of days. Camped at Lee's Ferry on the way back to Flagstaff. Visted some of our old people in San Angelo TX and then back to the house.

Brian (btggraphix) has a good suggestion. Combine it with a larger trip if you can. ...a lot to see and do out that way... We will not be able to make the 2015 show but hope you & yours have a blast.

Just go!

Master Guns,

Our rig is the dark blue Tiger, shown in several of the photos in the article that Brian linked.

We are expecting to be at OEXPO West next year. If you have ever even considered taking your rig off road or out of the country, you will have a ball.

Hey Tim - I have enjoyed the two OXW's and one The first OXE in Asheville this fall, but we are bit sure if we will make it this year in May. I taught one class back in May, and then 4 at the OXE and though I enjoyed doing it we are not wanting to commit again due to our uncertain travel plans. We are trying to reduce the number if times we agree to being ANYWHERE at a specific time 🙂

A link to the OXE write in TCM is Here to read about that one (had to add it because there are some photos of our rig in there 😉 )

I think it was very much worthwhile going to this event at least once for the whole experience and will certainly consider it again if our travels are such to put us in range of being there but decided to not commit to teaching again (the deadlines are too far in advance.). Make it a part of a larger trip....and it is probably early enough in the season to avoid crowds in the national parks and other attractions along your way.

Have fun, go for it!

Thanks for the responses and the reference to the truck camper magazine article. All great information. I'm hoping that someone will start a thread after the new year to organize the TC community!

It is an amazing experience, high in the mountains and surrounded by thousands of Expedition vehicles and their owners. Of course the best part is schmooozing with folks, especially in the compound formed up by the truck camper crowd - presided over by Bryan. Many of the folks that I knew from this forum were in attendance including Whazoo, Seldom Seen, Sheep Camp, 69Avion, BKA and others. It is one of the peak experiences with a TC. Afterwards we traveled all through the West for one of the best trips we've ever taken.

We won't make it this year, unfortunately. There is an event at the same time that we can not miss. I'll think about you guys though.

I took the time to read your article in TCM, nicely done, excellent photos you have done of that event.

Also an idea, for those that can't travel or have a different time period to travel, there's the Northwest Overland Rally in Washington. I went last year and plan to go again this year. I went in 2011 and 2012 too.

As for the Overland Expo West - undecided at this point.

I missed last year but went in 2012 and met the forum group in 13 and hope to make it back in 15. It's really something to see at least once whether or not you're a hardcore over lander with aspirations of a trip through South America or not. The camping area (big field) with everyone's different rigs/stories is reason enough to go.
